Will the correct shaft length vary regardless of height...

Quick question:

Can an average height person require a longer shaft based on the way he/she swings the club?

Reason for asking:

I committed to changing my swing in my golf lessons, which means breaking nearly a decade of bad habits for me. First major thing we're working on is the fact that I previously dropped my head WAY down, which forced me to come up on my downswing making it impossible to take a divot. Now that I'm staying up, I'm having a really hard time reaching the ball and am topping or catching it on the bottom couple of grooves with my irons. I've been struggling with this for a couple of weeks now and the only couple of decent shots I hit on the range today are when I held the club so that my left palm was hanging off of it to simulate a longer shaft length. I am 5'-10" so I assumed that standard length clubs are fine for me. Is that a poor assumption?

Thanks. Just making sure I'm not blaming equipment on my swing. Instructor had me do the hand off the grip thing to see if I might need a longer club or if it was in my head last time, but I didn't really hit it any better at the time. After doing it on the range by myself w/o the pressure of someone watching, it did seem to make a difference. Suppose the next step is to see if i can borrow some longer clubs from someone to see if it helps.

Talk to Lyle about TLT fitting. Tough to beat.

But not as important as your swing.

Some may disagree, but I still think its all subjective. Especially since I can still hit those orange dot pings straight.

not sure what there is to disagree about. the individual's swing is the most important factor, no question - but starting with a wrist to floor measurement is better than starting with a height measurement

a short guy with alligator arms might need longer than "standard" clubs
a talk guy with monkey arms might need shorter than "standard" clubs
a normal guy with normal arms and an upright swing plane might need shorter than "standard" clubs
a normal guy with normal arms and a flat swingplane might be able to get away with longer than "standard" clubs - unless he's not athletic enough to handle the extra length

a tall, athletic/coordinated guy with alligator arms and a flat swingplane is going to wind up with some long clubs

You've been here long enough to know that there are quite a few disagreeable folks here.

Myself included.

As usual, I think it's pretty safe to worry about equipment later and concentrate on my swing. I've been digging ditches on the range with the same clubs recently. Boy are my wrists aching.
