Went putter shopping.

Well, the local EW had a putter fitting going on today, so I brought my latest traitor down for a checkout. Results were abysmal. The guy gave me some putting tips and had me try out a Guerin-Rife Hybrid Blade. My stroke improved a bunch, just by using this putter, and the tips helped me even more. He was clearly convinced that this is the right putter for me. So of course I ordered one.

Dammit.

...anybody want to buy a brand-new 35" SC Circa '62 #3...cheap?

You? Another putter?

Just out of curiosity, how many putters have you gone through in the last 6 months? Louisville, Heavy Putter, at least one Cameron, and now a Rife. I am pretty sure I am missing one or two, as well. Hopefully, the fitting ends the cycle.

So what exactly did they do during the fitting? Besides throwing new putters in your hands, what kind of techniques did they use to fit you with a putter?

Eracer, I came very very close to asking how much you want for that putter. Of all the Scotty Camerons I've tried, that one is the best. But I came to my senses. I am a bad ho.

They had a sensor attached to the shaft that was laser-aligned to a target about 10 feet away. The sensor wirelessly transmitted data to a laptop as you hit putts. I tried my current putter, and a few other putters, including an Odyssey Sabertooth, a Yes Sandie, a TM Spider, a Nike Craz-E, and the Rife Hybrid Mallet and Hybrid Blade.

I putted five balls with each, trying to keep my stroke as normal as possible. The software showed face angles and clubhead path through the backswing, at impact, and the through-stroke. It also showed acceleration, timing, and loft angles through the stroke. Results were correlated for accuracy (within a range) and repeatability.

I got the best results with the Rife Hybrid Blade and the Craz-E. The Ping felt too harsh for me. The results with the Rife were the best, and the putter felt good to me.

Just for the record, you haven't missed anything except the Nike Oz T-130, which I recently brought out of semi-retirement. Maybe I should name it Brett?

Nah, it has to threaten to retire a couple more times before it deserves that name.

Was it one of those 3 pointed devises they attach to the putter? That is some slick technology that I tried out with the Heavy Putter guys once. Nifty stuff on stroke and face angle. What did you end up with for a playing length?

The sensor looks like an upside-down "Y", and sits perpendicular to the putting line. The laser is held against the face, and the whole thing is aimed directly at the flagstick. You take your stance and grip while the laser is on the stick. Then the laser is removed, and you hit the five putts. There's a wire that runs to a small module that clips onto your belt. He confirmed that 33" is the best length for me.

Thats the one. I would sure love one of those machines to work on the putting stroke, but I can only imagine how high the price tag is.

Sadly, for me, I had already found the putter configuration that works best for me through years of trial and error before I got on the machine, but it was nice to see through using the machine that I had arrived at the correct answer.

The Rife is still firmly at home in the bag as well, even after a year we are still in the honeymoon stage. I did however just do a drunken ho on a putter that I got a steal on the other night. For some reason I really though I needed another one.
