Tour Burner sucks

First of all, this was only my first impression, and I did not give it a fair test.

I just got back from Dick's Sporting Goods. I went to get the lie angle of my 5 iron checked so I can get a TLT from Lyle. I went up to the counter and asked one of the guys to check it. He said sure and asked why I needed the measurements done. I told him I was having a set of mp-30's fit with TLT, and he said, "Oh, awesome!" then gave the other employee a funny look.

Then I grabbed a Tour Burner, 9.5 degrees, and stiff flex. For reference, I played 18 earlier today, and drove a green at 290 with my Bridgestone, and carried some bunkers that I paced at around 270 from the teebox.

The longest carry I had with the Tour Burner was 250 and longest total shot was 260. Most shots were a big slice that started on target and then moved to the right. The other WI guys can verify that most of my shots are draws and sometimes hooks. I couldn't hit this thing left at all. I like to hit a power draw, but for some reason this thing just wouldn't turn over.

The Tour Burner felt good and looks very good, but for some reason I got no distance with it. Ballflight was not overly high, and the employee said he loved my swing and didn't know what the deal was either. I don't think anything was wrong with the simulator, because it got my 5 iron distance dead on.

Has anybody else had a similar experience? Maybe I just get tense in the simulator.

Interesting.

Perhaps your J33 has a closed face and the Burner is neutral?

The J33 is neutral, if anything it is a bit open. I don't think the face angle has anything to do with it. I hit a Hibore XL Tour straight or with a baby draw. I need to try a Tour Burner outside on the course. Don't know anybody with one yet though.

And I hit the normal Tour Burner, not the tp. It should have a closed face, right?

I think it has to be tension from being on the simulator. I'm pretty sure this club was not open.

Does anybody know if this club likes a lower tee height? I was hitting it high on the face, but they didn't have a shorter tee for me to use.

yeah j33r is pretty neutral. you have to also realize that j33r can be sneaky long.

however, my friend (who also plays j33r 420cc) thought that tour burner is longer, but the trajectory was too high (w/ same shaft that he has on 420cc). he eventually went back to j33r and sold the burner.

I'll vouch for MIKE1218's swing. It's a thing of beauty!! And also his ball flight is exactly what he said it is.. draw and very, very LONG.

Many simulators, especially the cheaper ones like you'd find in Dicks, won't measure driver distance properly. They're more likely dialed for iron ballspeeds. Had you had your own driver there as a baseline, it would have probably been short as well.

Without a proper comparison, you can't really vouch either way.

And this coming from a guy who hates TM.

No, the Tour Burner really does suck.

Ping G10 is easily 15 yards further.

Funny enough, at my store we have a dude who comes in every so often, and I've helped him. He's tried the G10, the J33R, the Superquad, and a few others this year, and I convinced him to get the Tour Burner(as per Lyle's recommendation actually) and he absolutely loves it.

Very well. My comments were just directed at the fact that the simulator probably sucked, not the product.

To each their own, of course.

I am going to hazard a guess with your swing the shaft was not a good fit. That club set up is light weight so some tweaking needs to be done. You've got enough power the light setup is not needed. Next time, when you get a chance, hit a R7 TP something with a stiff or X stiff shaft. My guess is you will just "smoke" the ball with that club. 8.5* loft.

For you?
Perhaps.

For me?
15 yards less.

No simulator - 30 minutes of testing on the range. The spin killed the G10.

What type of simulator were you on? How fast is your swing speed? If your swing speed is over 110 you need to be on a Vector or similar (must use high speed camera) launch monitor to get an accurate result. The doppler systems simply run a calculation based on ball speed launch angle and clubhead speed to calculate RPMs, distance roll etc. The Vector is much more accurate at the higher clubhead speeds, but the Doppler systems are more accurate for lower clubhead speeds. I just finished getting fitted for my new driver shaft, I tried it at Golf Galaxy (a doppler system) and I was noticing that my carry distance was significantly off (more than 25yds.) Went a small local store with the Vector system and it was spot on. Outside of that it could be just a dead face. I have had problems with clubs that I have bought in the past couple of years. With the new high CORs and MOI the smallest variation and I am talking fractions of millimeters can be the difference between a face with a COR near the legal limit and one that is a dud.
