Does a custom fitting make sense for me?

Great forum! I googled for golf forums and I'm really digging this one. Good stuff. Sorry if this question has been asked before, but here goes.

I've been playing for almost 20 years, but I play only 3-5 rounds a year. My goal each round is to break 100.

Long story short, I have a $650 gift card for Callaway and I'm eyeing up the X-20's. I'm currently playing Top Flite midsize tour irons from 1998 w/ TT S300 standard length/lie. My 7 iron goes 150+ straight with a nice arch.

My question is, with the level of play does it make sense to get custom fitted for my current swing, which is not very consistent, or to do the web fitting and adjust my swing to the results? I did the wrist to floor measurement and it came out to +1/2 1*up.

ALWAYS better to get custom fitted IF the fitter is good. I've found there are a lot of morons out there fitting clubs incorrectly. Once you get fitted and it works you won't have to do it again. Just hold on to the info.

AND most Ping fitters are good.

A simple fitting works fine for an inconsistent swing. Shaft length, shaft flex, and dynamic lie testing are all you need. Once you start playing more and grooving a swing, then you can get a more sophisticated fitting.

So I got my fitting done...

and the fitter suggested +1" flat. I was using the uniflex shafts and compared to my Top Flite's, I was hitting longer, but MUCH higher. Would sticking TT S300 shafts on them lower the trajectory enough to make a difference?

I would say yes. Based on your 7-iron distance you are right on the edge between regular and firm. Which side you fall on depends on how you load the club.

I hit my current 7-iron about 150 and the S300 shafts were too stiff for me (although they did lower the ballflight.) Switching to R300 worked for me. I have a smooth swing with a mid-release.
