    Question for CG14 owners

Has anyone had problems with the gelback inserts falling out on these??

I've heard it a few times, and I wanted more opinions before I dropped $100 on one

Also, is there any difference whatsoever between the chrome and black pearl other than aesthetics??

    Thanks in advance...

  2. I've had no problem with the insert. Alot of people say the the BP finish wears off quickly but I have not realy noticed. I dont care what my wedges look like, I just hate the glare of chrome.

  3. I've thought about trying one of these. There has to be a reason why so many tour guys are using them.

I sure do like my two (54 and 60). The I have the dark rather than chrome models. No problems with the inserts falling out -- none at all.

I also have 54 (dark gunmetal color), and a 60 in the chrome.

The finish doesn't bother me too much. I use my 60 religiously from 100 yards and in.

I've not had a single problem with the inserts and I love the feel of the wedges.

The 60 was one of my best purchases this season.

Free or kickbacks has to be a good enough reason I think.

I would say for such important clubs as wedges, their reasons are better than the clubs just being free. It certainly helps that they are high quality clubs.

Good wedges no-doubt... I don't think it makes a lick of difference honestly. It's about what makes YOU feel more confident and what fits you better.

If your confident, and looking good helps... You'll always feel like you do better, or the club is an extension of you.

I don't know about that entirely. Sergio was using the CG14's at the PGA and we all know who's paying him. They had a thread on WRX about this and I was amazed. A ton of non-Cleveland guys are playing these.

They are great wedges, no doubt. Of course there are several excellent choices, and I am not hawking the CG14s. Any of the new grooved, top-line wedges are pretty amazing. The Cleveland zip grooves produce some pretty amazing results -- stuff one could not do a few years ago. Sometimes you need to reduce the spin these things can produce.

It may just be in my head, but the feel of the CG14s is very solid. I play the two dot versions normally. Around the greens, the type of lies and grasses (as well as how tightly things are mown) play a role in the bounce that works best for you. Out of the sand, I use the 60 degree typically and it works great in all types of sand.

One of my wedge rules is never hit my most lofted wedge as far as I can. That does not mean not to swing it hard... I often swing faster on shorter shots than longer shots, but then club is opened up for more loft. I try never to reach a full set position when hitting the 58 or 60. I drop back to the next wedge if in doubt. Since adopting this philosophy, my wedge play has improved. You guys might want to try this approach -- for me it helps produce better distance control and accuracy.

    RCI,

    I've starting doing exactly that.

If I think I would grab a 56, other than the sand, I would think about it and go down a wedge, and grab my 52..

My biggest change, has been using my PW, more than usual, and leaving the 51 in the bag for certain shots.

    Fatc1ty,

Yeah, there is something more controlling about restricting the wedges to less than a full slotted backswing and trying to crush them. Those wild crazy pulled shots don't seem to happen any more either.

And the comment about not shredding the ball is spot on... when the new grooves first appeared, balls were not ready for them, and even now I still get some lines sometimes (but not the curllie-ques pealing off the ball in the past.) But for the most part the ProV1x and CG-14 have come to an agreement not to leave too many marks when they fight.

One other thing. Grooves do wear out, just not as quickly anymore. I'm on my second set of CG-14s, and thinking the third set may be just around the corner.

  14. I have 3 black pearls CG10 and 11's. One I bought, a 46* used off eBay for $20 that was hit a lot or more likely improperly cleaned - like with steel wool. The bp sheen was almost completely gone. Hits beautiful just like the ones I bought new. Wedges are like wine and unlike women - better with age.
