Squareback Hunt

We're off to Golfsmith in Shaumburg, Il in pursuit of the elusive lefty Scotty Squareback. They have one in stock. Not even a right handed model anywhere to be seen at the Golf Galaxys or B & G Golfs here in the Beertown area. Under the tree all I had was a Packer ball mark and green repair tool to clip on a hat. Due to the current boom in mortgage refinances my business has been unbelievable for the last month, (after some scary slow months before) so the wife has decided she needs a new camera and I can buy a putter or some wedges.

Not sure I'll pop for the putter, but am excited that I can at least see one and hit a few putts with it. Not only that but I'll be piling a Portillo's Italian beef and a Chicago dog or two on top of the two turkey dinners I scarfed yesterday, and the seafood crepes and prime rib on X-Mas eve. We'll be washing the beef and dogs down with a Jamba Juice smoothie.

The food alone is worth the trip. My only fear is Golfsmith is close to Ikea, and the wife my not be able to resist wanting to stop and look at Swedish made crap.

GS Schaumburg is not particularly close to Ikea, although you could drive by it, depending on which way go.

Be careful though, we got an ice storm this morning, and although the roads aren't very slippery, people are playing bumper cars everywhere. I saw about 10 crashes on my drive in this morning, and the State Police wanted to close all the Interstates.

Go to GS in Downers Grove, its close to Home Depot.
I miss Portillo's cheese fries. Good stuff.

You may have to order one of those Scotties if you looking for a left handed version as they are probably pretty rare. Hopefully you will at least find one to roll around a few times to see if it works for you.

Yumm yumm, I miss Portillo's! When I worked in Libertyville there was one right around the corner on route 60. Loved to get the beef & cheddar on a croisant.

Been to that Golfsmith before, ran into it by accident going to the mall down there.

IKEA...you are absolutely right. The whole trip down there was to go to IKEA since a bunch of people told me and my g/f they had nice stuff for cheap. I dont know what they are smoking but i saw NOTHING in that store that i would want in my home...i dont care how cheap it was/is. Probably because its built and looked exactly how it was priced...cheap.

Mall was fun, GolfSmith was better, IKEA was an absolute zoo and how it stays in business selling that crap amazes me.

Good luck with the SC!!!

Ummm... the Golfsmith in Downers Grove is 24 miles out of his way, each way. More to the point, I frequent them both, and there's no reason to make that trip. You are not likely to find a salesguy who knows half as much as any poster here, nor who cares at all at either location. It's probably too late, but check the Golfsmith coupons thread for a til-the-end-of-the-year 10-20% off on everything.

On the Ikea front, I admit we have some pieces from there in our house. I also agree that 99% of it is terribly cheap crap. That said, there are a few decent, solid items. We have a coffee table from there that is relatively ancient, sturdy as hell, and not ugly. Also a bookshelf. Now, the office desk I bought there was a mistake. And don't eat the effen food! I'll eat anything, but that Ikea 'food' is nasty.

Btw, there's a Golf Galaxy just down the street from Golfsmith, too, but anything you can't find at the GS, probably isn't at GG ( except, sometimes, someone who cares a little ).

Been to that Ikea store 1 time, wasn't impressed at all. For that matter I really don't like Woodfield mall either.

Twas a successful hunt. I bagged the rare and elusive 35" lefty Scotty Squareback. The roads weren't icy, and the fog only made travel difficult after the quarry was already taken. In the past, I have had blade style putters in my sights, but never pulled the trigger. I could never get by how the plumber's neck on most of them, to my eyes, make the sight line look as if it is toward the heel.

The "double bend" shaft on the Squareback doe not give me that feeling. I had never so much as rolled a ball right handed off a Scotty. I putted in the store with it for about 30 minutes. Great feel to the face. Made the Pinnacles in the putting area feel like balatas. It's upright enough where it is easy for me to get my eyes over the ball. I like the blade style face, but the extended "squareback" gives it the extra weight and stability I have always convinced myself I like in a mallet.

Me likey, but who knows. It's my first putter purchase in about five years, and I loved the Two Ball when I bought it. Nobody understands the operator error factor better than me when it comes to having a flat stick in my hands. I'm looking forward to giving it a try for real. In about three and a half months. I also bought my daughter a Blossom mallet putter for 10% of the price of the Scotty. Pink grip, pink headcover. She was excited.

We enjoyed Portillo's, and since I've been on an eating rampage for the last two days, I made it a three day hat trick. Had a dipped beef/sausage combo with hot peppers and mozzarella cheese, and a char polish with mustard, cheddar, and grilled onions. Ate a pack of fries and washed it all down with a Coke, not a diet. Hit the Jamba Juice heading back to the X-Way on the way out of town for a mango smoothie with energy boost. After 1/1/09, I start working on my weight shift by hopefully shifting some of the weight off my body for the start of golf season in the Spring.

We also spent a wonderful hour and a half browsing the three floors of Swedish crap at Ikea. The wife purchased an Antifoni and the daughter ended up with a Kvart. They seemed happy, and that only set us back another $34.00. Was worth it to pick up the putter.
