Considering an iron shaft change...several questions.

I'm not getting a very good ballflight with my irons right now. Way too high.

They're DGS300's, would a switch to FST ProWhite's lower my ballflight?

Also, if I were to make that change...I'd have to get my irons bored out to .370. Nobody around me would do that kind of job.....does anybody have a good clubmaker around who'd they'd suggest to bore out irons?

Thanks,

YG

Re: Considering an iron shaft change...several questions.

I'd pay attention to your ballflight. If the ball rises to apex and then just "sit's there" for a while, then drops, that's too much spin. Personally I love the stiff tip, high bend of a DSG so would go X100.

Re: Considering an iron shaft change...several questions.

I've pretty much been using the same two balls.

Precept U-Tri Tour and Nike TA2-SPN.

Are X100's heavier than S300's?

I have S400's in my wedges, and love how they hit, so I don't know.

X100's are the same weight basically. S400's are the same as S300's just slightly heavier by 3-4g's. I had S400's in my irons awhile back and loved them as well, not sure why I switched really.

I don't know that switching to FST's though will lower your flight, they basically have the same playing characteristics (if I remember correctly) as DG's- high bend point and firm tip.

May want to take Ez's advice and try some X100's. I just installed a set of Project X 6.5 flighteds into my buddies CG2 irons, he switched from X100's and I didn't notice a real difference in the height of his shots.

Re: Considering an iron shaft change...several questions.

I play S300's in one set of irons, and PX 5.5's in other.. I have the non-flighted PX's and they seriously brought my flight down. Real boring trajectory that climbs and just levels out nicely.

Have you hit any PX's? Try something non-flighted.

That might not be a bad idea, I have never hit or known anybody that played the regular PX's or the KBS tour from FST (those only come in .355 so you wouldn't even have to bore them out). There must be some reason that a TON of pros hit em...

Re: Considering an iron shaft change...several questions.

I'd give 'em a try.. My next set is going to have KBS Tours in them, as I just think they are a smoother shaft than the PX. People complain that the PX's are harsh and hard feeling. I don't see, or feel for that matter the harshness.

I had some Rifle Flighted 6.0's that would just ROCKET the ball into outer space. I'm a high hitter, so I shoot for stuff to bring my ball flight down.

I would agree, the rifles I have tend to hit moonballs to but I like the feel so I deal with it.

Re: Considering an iron shaft change...several questions.

no offense to those that use them, but S400's are just "out of spec" or rejected S300's - Given how crazy so many golfers are about their equipment (myself included) I'm surprised they're as popular as they are.
I can completely understand companies using them in their wedges, they're cheap, they have a name buyers recognize, and with wedges, they're not as concerned with matching to the rest of the set. That said, I'm not sure they'd make a lot of sense in a set of irons. Just because they're heavier than S300's, you don't know where exactly in the shaft that extra weight is distributed, and you don't know if the shafts are any stiffer than regular on-spec S300s. (of course, they can be matched by a competent clubmaker, but at that point, you might as well just use a bunch of regular old Dynamic shafts and skip the "gold" part)

Anyway, the FST Pro Whites might lower ball flight a little bit and based on the price, I think they're a much easier $olution than some of the other shafts mentioned.
If price was no object, I'd say to maybe try some X100's or look for some of the KB Tour shafts or check with some of the sponsors for that tour version of the Dynamic Golds.

No offense at all Rick, I knew this when I bought them. I also know its all in between the ears too, but I prefer the extra weight in them even if it is only a few grams. My dispersion has tightened big time since I installed these.

Yes its probably all mental, but everything helps, right???

And I believe that pretty much no golfers actually know this but they believe they are 100 grams heavier because of the numbers, so that's why they buy them. Ignorance is bliss....

Re: Considering an iron shaft change...several questions.

YG, I went from TT to FST's and I love them. They did lower my ball flight( I tend to really hit 'down'on the ball and get a higher ball flight with my irons) some what, and the feel is so much better. I ordered a reamer from GS for like 20 bucks, and it is almost idiot proof to use. I did my Mizzy's and it is very easy. For the price of the pro whites, how can you go wrong? Even having to buy the reamer, the FST's are cheaper than TT. I buy the FST's of fleabay. They are like $3 a shaft over there. Changing to these shafts was one of the best things I have done.
