Where do you trim the shaft?

I've regripped my own clubs before, but have never reshafted or shortened any of my clubs. I want to shorten a club 1/4" and have no idea where to cut the shaft. Can I simply removed the grip and take the 1/4" from there or do I have to completely disassemble the club, trim the shaft near the hozzle, reattach, etc?

Any advice is appreciated.

DAVE...
Can I use a driver shaft in a 3 wood by trimming to length at the butt end or will this not work well ?

It depends on the shaft.

Some shafts require tip trimming for a fariway wood. It's usually 1" from the tip for a 3 wood, but there's no standard.

Tip trimming also makes the shaft play stiffer, as the stiffness is in the butt end. Tipping means you'll cut less of the butt off for final length, effectively keeping the stiffness of the shaft. The other way around, trimming the butt, makes the shaft less stiff.

What shaft are you thinking of trimming?

Got a Snake Eyes Viper 3 wood head and a Harrision Striper J Titanium Reg Shaft which came out of a driver, Golfsmith trim chart , if I am reading it correctly seems to indicate this shaft can trim at 1 inch butt end for a 3 wood. .

If it is to shorten it then you can trim it at the grip end...to stiffent it at the tip.

After you have removed the grip wrap the area you intend to trim with a little masking tape. Measure , then mark on the masking tape and using a fine toothed hacksaw do the trimming. DO NOT help it along by breaking it off when you get partially through the cut. Once you get about 3/4's of the way through slow down your cutting action. Make it as clean a cut as you can. You don't want to frey the shaft end.
