Thread: If you knew it was Illegal, would you hit it???

  1. Re: If you knew it was Illegal, would you hit it???

It would add 6-8 yards to your drive. Minimal change. I don't understand this endeavour at all. Makes zero sense.

Heck the right ball will do that!!!!!!! Hope it is better than the Fail Safe 3...That thing is one of the worst component driver heads I have ever hit.....I like the finish.... hate the results!!!

Re: If you knew it was Illegal, would you hit it???

Didn't GEEK release a 551 model aswell to commemorate the long drive record that was also non-conforming???

I dont understand why a manufacturer would willingly release a model, or 2 for that matter, that they know can't be used in tournament play? Surely they're cutting off over half their market and therefore sales would be in the crapper and you'd make a loss....

But i disagree with this part of your statement:

"Not only is it really unethical to make something that is illegal"

i have no problem with companies making a golf club that is non conforming - if the market forces have created that demand then companies should be able to profit from delivering a product for them.

I put the onus on the golfers for removing the demand by not purchasing the clubs, not the company for supplying the clubs. The companies will soon follow the supply and demand forces of the marketplace.

your in a difficult position being a liason between the companies and public - having to gauge these market forces in order to make a profit is not easy. hopefully your customers and potential customers can see the merit of doing business with a retailer like yourself that promotes playing the game by the rules and that you can capitalize on it from that angle.

with that said, I also have no problem hanging the scumbags who try to play in events with those clubs by their toe nails.
    :dead:
Good points. I guess I have no problem with that. I was being a bit presumptious....If these types of clubs can assist elderly (or others with slow swing speeds) who have no desire to compete in USGA tournaments, then I am fine with it.

However, and heres where I might be jumping the gun is if this head was truly made for those elderly or slower speed swings, they'd be offered in a higher loft....but these aren't

These, are made, and so far promoted, as a driver for those who don't give a damn.

I believe the 551 became non conforming accidentally.

Yes. Only certain lofts were deemed "illegal". The specs that it needed to conform to were slightly off, it had nothing to do with COR if I'm not mistaken. Something stupid like the hosel axis was 1* short of required spec, or something that ridiculously stupid.

The DCT is a killer head. Very long when mated to the right shaft.

I won't buy a non-conforming head just because I don't see that big of a benefit in it. I just switched to a new driver, and I sacrificed 10yds on average to find more fairways. I can't see the benefit for this type of nonconforming technology for me. I have nothing against anyone who wants to use it though. I don't play in any tournaments, and most of the people I end up playing with are out just having fun they will take mulligans, improve lies etc. I don't see why people have a problem with this type of golf club being produced and sold. Do any of you actually believe that anyone will be able to get this into a sanctioned tourney?? Who cares if someone plays this on the weekend??

why not just get an illegal ball? there's a few out there, Cayman Desperado for one. good for 20-30 yards extra.

also, there's tons of non-conforming clubs out there. many would surprise you.

I've read enough that I don't have to read anymore. I think this thread is "Unethical" and You should've discussed it with Steve as one of his distributors/dealers not in a public forum. JMHO

PS- I love the color personally and for those of you that don't know, he wasn't trying to get away with anything or be sneaky. There have been a lot of OEMs produce non conforming heads due to "Hot faces" or higher than legal cor ratings.

IMO for every good idea Steve has, he has one dud. This is the dud. Both the idea and the color stink as far as I am concerned. The whole illegal, beats COR crap is so meaningless anyways.

Would you play a ball that went 20 yards farther and was against USGA regulations? I think not.

  14. Re: If you knew it was Illegal, would you hit it???

WBL, you are a distance addict. I don't really hit it that far on average. I can bomb em if I give em hell on a day when i'm swinging good to begin with. With temperatures and conditions lately (cool&wet) i'm happy with a drive of 260. Most are probably more like 245. I haven't been able to play this new driver when it's 80* out and dry so we'll see. When ya think about it if you play a 430yd par 4 and hit it 250 it only leaves 180 left in. That's not too bad.

For some reason i'm just not interested in Geek anything so I wouldn't hit it for that reason. Also I try my best to adhere to the rules, so again I wouldn't hit it for that reason. Is there any reason i'm using the word reason so much? See what golf does to me.

Why is it unethical? Steve wouldn't care what people thought of his product anyways. I've seen his discussions in several forums where he can appreciate the positive (his audience) and the negative (those that won't be purchasing).

How is that any different that any other component peice or OEM club?
