I use a hydraulic shaft remover. Anything more than a heat gun is overkill.

  3. Re: Basic Clubbuilding question...

The problem with a heat gun is you put heat over way to large an area that is totally unnecessary. With a micro torch the heat is exactly where you want it.

Which is why I mentioned in my post that buying a gun with tips that direct the heat more precisely is the key.

I've yet to run into an issue with the gun, but seen a'plenty given with a torch and no experience.

    Not if you're careful.

Sure you can be super careful, or you can just buy a micro torch that doesn't get so hot and you don't have to worry about it.
Blew up the bag, not sure what's going in next...
    Any suggestions?

You don't really have to be super careful, just don't jam the fire all up on it and it's no big deal. Basically the amount of care that I use when doing pretty much anything. I mean you can't just set it on fire and expect it not to ruin stuff, but if you're just paying attention and not getting all pissy about how long it takes it's pretty easy.

But it doesn't really matter. Those micro torches seem pretty cool - I've never had one. How hot do they get? Are they cool enough that you can just do whatever you want without any chance of hot spots? What kind of fuel do they use?

I love my micro/pen torch. It runs on butane and I have never had it get hot enough to scorch, burn/melt the paint or leave a hot spot. I think I spent all of $12 on it at home depot, plus maybe another $4 for the butane.

Right on, I'll have to check them out next time I'm out there. If nothing else it'll be nice not to have to hold that big fuel bottle of the normal torch.

I broke down and bought a heat gun the other week.. It worked pretty good, but slower than a torch I thought. I bought one with a smaller tip, and heat control.
