Thread: 460CC Ping G5 Offset Driver

  1. 460CC Ping G5 Offset Driver

    Hello Everyone-

I was looking into buying this G5 offset driver for myself, (as I have a mean slice), so I could hopefully improve my driving skills off the tee. Does anyone own or has anyone tried out this offset driver? Does it help with your game?

    Myyyyy Bizzag:
    TaylorMade r7 bag
    TaylorMade racOS 3 thru P
    Cobra MSpeed 10.5*
    Cobra Baffler 2r
    Odyssey White Steel #1
and whatever balls I happen to have

  2. I have the 10.5 offset with a regular flex ProLaunch. It's absolutely awesome. I can crank on it and straight down the middle. I really shouldn't be playing an offset (I get a minor hook once in awhile) but it is not as severe an offset as I normally see. It is a fantastic club. I rarely miss the fairway and it's been longer then any other driver I've ever hit (so far).

If the shafts work in the Launcher I have and the Tour Edge Exotics I'm getting this will be for sale at about $200. No scratches or anything on it. It looks brand new if I clean it off. If interested let me know. I just got the Launcher back with the new Comp NT "nano" shaft yesterday and trying it out today. I'm hoping to get a couple more straight yards. If no one is interested I'll keep it and reshaft it with a "nano" shaft.

Your money would probably be better spent on a couple lessons. I have never liked the idea of an offset driver, or for that matter trying to fix a swing flaw with equipment. When you finally do fix the swing flaw and use a good swing, it will likely result in a poor shot and possibly a hook. In time you may see positive results from the driver, therebye engraining the feel of a poor swing. You can likely fix your swing with lessons from a good instructor in a couple 1/2 hour lessons for under $100. You at least may be able to get down to a consistent fade which is very easy to control and hit fairways by simply starting from the right side of the tee box and aiming down the left side of the fairway.

If you have been slicing the ball for years, have no intent on fixing the swing flaw, then an offset driver may help. Realize once you have an offset driver, it is highly unlikely you will fix the flaw that is causing your slice without again replacing your driver.

  4. I've taken lessons and I know what causes ME to hit a slice. I can control it with my grip position. So when I hit the Ping offset I use my old grip position and when I hit another I correct it. Point is, this is a great driver. The longest hitter I ever played with used an offset driver. He hit them 320 yards straight down the middle. Lessons and a different club would probably have screwed him up, LOL.

I think this is important. Knowing how to correct the problem. I would likely say that an offset driver may not be a bad choice if you have a good understanding of the cause and affect of the golf swing. In the same sense that Phil carried one Draw based, and one Fade based driver. Not saying you need to be Phil to make this decision. Unfortunately, without knowing more about a person it is usually easy to try and assume that if a person has a slice they cannot fix or at least regulate to a fade, getting a better understanding is more important and would likely better fix or control the problem. In the same sense if they do not understand what is causing the slice enough to regulate the problem, they will likely not know that the bad hook they just hit was a result of a decent swing with an offset driver. I just hate to think where I would be now had I got the offset driver I looked at when I started playing. I would likely be using my 3w or even a 5w off the tee still. Which is not necessarily a bad thing starting out until you figure out the driver, but I certainly would not be as happy with my game. I am also not one to say "don't use a driver", because it is a very important part of a good game, but as many will agree, the course may not be the best place to work out the kinks in most cases.

  6. I tend to agree with Jayhawk's thinking on this, but it is all dependent on what the particular individual is looking to do. So I think it's like this: if you are serious about wanting to learn to golf, it is better to get lessons and address what is causing the slice over buying a piece of equipment which enables a person to retain a swing flaw. But it is perfectly legitimate for one to just want to enjoy the game as it is, and an offset driver can make the game more enjoyable for those with a tendency to slice.

Warbird, you love all your drivers.

I agree with what's said, you'll benefit much more by fixing the problem rather than buying a new piece of equipment(or just get a non-offset one, and get lessons too)!
