Thread: Gloves, I'd like some info and opinions about gloves

  1. Gloves, I'd like some info and opinions about gloves

I've never used gloves, and I'm beginning to have some trouble with my left hand. I've got the classic calluses illustrated in Hogan's 5 Lessons, but the one just below my ring finger is really getting bothersome. It's very uncomfortable now for me to get my grip on the club, and I'm at least a little concerned that the discomfort may be affecting the quality of my control over the club.

So I've decided, at least for a little while, to try using a glove, and am interested in knowing what brands you've found to be good. I also understand that some of you rotate through gloves during a round because that helps the gloves last longer, but I would appreciate some explanation about that.

Not that the brand is that important but I like Titleist Perma Soft gloves. They fit my hand well and the leather stays soft just like that name says. Any quality leather glove that's a good fit would work though.

I only rotate gloves when it's hot so that's most of the time here. Rotating the gloves gives me a better chance of having a dry one to use.
There's really no point in listening to other People. They're either going to be agreeing with you or saying stupid stuff. Dogbert

  3. I was using Mizuno's for a while but they don't last that long. The best glove I've found for the $, believe it or not, is the Nike Durafeel. The most important thing is to put it back into the plastic case it comes in immediately after use. I left one in my pocket by accident and the thumb got crispy. They also come in black, which I like. I've never been much for Nike products but this one has passed my test.

  4. I carry about 5 with me at all times on the course. I usually use a differant one for every nine holes, more often if it is really hot and humid. I find this helps them last a lot longer. Five will usually last about the same amount of time as 8-9 if used constantly. (I also rotate 3 pairs of shoes, a differant pair every round).

The best and only glove is the Titleist Perma soft (actually the players soft is even better but cost $29.99 per)

  5. When I first saw "I also rotate 3 pairs of shoes," I had visions of you after the 6th hole pulling another pair of shoes out of your bag, and then doing the same after the 12th hole. Then I read the rest of the sentence.

Now if anyone comes in here and starts talking about how they rotate 4 pairs of jockstraps during the round, I'm outta here...

I think it is important to rotate gloves between rounds, if not during rounds. It allows the leather a chance to dry out and get back in form. I buy about 10, put 3-4 in my bag, and use each for about 2 rounds, rotating them after each round, then switch them out. Prior to doing this a single glove would last me about 3-5 rounds. Doing this probably gives me 15-20 rounds on a glove. I usually only rotate them during a round if they start to get sweaty.

During the summer I use primarily wet weather gloves which allow for a better grip if your hands sweat. I have also found that they last alot longer than standard gloves, almost twice as long. After this year I am pretty certain I will only be using Wet Weather gloves between June and August, and even likely year round. I just wish you only had to buy one, since I only wear the left one unless it is raining.

BTW, even with glove, I still get a pretty bad callus in the beginning where you mentioned, after about 6-7 rounds of dealing with it, it finally got worn enough that it no longer hurt. I hope it helps, but the glove may not be the entire answer. Then again, I started using corded grips last year, and it wasn't as bad prior to that time.

LOL, I had the same thought. Anyway i just swtiched the grips on my clubs to the Lamkin Crossline cord and have found that i no longer need gloves and im pumped about that. Rather than buying gloves you may want to try surgical tape. You know the white tape used for ankles and such. I have a nasty callus on my right hand and the tape worked wonders....but if you are hellbent on a glove I found the Footjoy stay sof to be pretty good, the titleist is good to but they dont make it big enough to be comfortable on my hand.

I use Callaway cadet X-Spann. Great gloves, last forever.

I also took a shot at some Mizuno leather gloves on e-bay, got 3 gloves for 9 bucks. So far so good, well worth the money.

I also like Taylor Made gloves, but they are BLOODY expensive around here.

  9. Okay, that's good to hear about how to take care of them so if I do get some, I'll get the most use out of them for the money. I bought a dozen Maxfli Blackmaxes some time ago, and as long as I don't lose the ball, or scuff it too much, I keep using them. I've got a couple of them that are rather yellowish tinged and most of the logo marking paint has been erased.

  10. Until recently, I played with corded grips which tended to eat up gloves pretty quickly. My son gave me a Bionic Golf Glove for Christmas last year. I loved the feel of it and found that it lasted much longer than previous gloves I had been using. When it did finally wear out, I ordered another one. It is somewhat pricey at $25; but the extra longivity compensates.

Just be aware, I believe the Bionic Glove is illegal for USGA Sanctioned events, unless you are using it for Arthritis in the hands.

I just went Googling, and that looks to be the case. Golfers with arthritis in the hands are permitted to use them for USGA rounds, so I guess you need to get a doctor's note for those instances.

  13. Footjoy Weather Soft gloves. Toughest soft glove on the market. I have had FJWS's for years. Everytime I go with a different glove, I always end up back with a weather soft when the other one wears out.

  14. Callaway's hold up the best for me. Then Titleist. The rest wear out after a month. I haven't tried rotating them though. That sounded interesting. Also the wet weather gloves holding up better.
