Winn grips

I've always been a Golf Pride man; Tour Velvets on my irons, Full Cord Tour Velvets on my Woods and Wedges. Recently I've started to really work on my game, full swing specifically, and so I've been spending more time at the range. Because of all this extra time I've started getting some rough spots on my glove hand (middle and ring fingers). It's to the point of whenever I grip a club without my glove on it is quite noticeable, and a little uncomfortable. I realize that this is more than likely due to me gripping the club too tight but...

I was walking through Golfsmith the other night and came across the new Nickent hybrids. Having never seen one up close and personal I decided to check it out. The first thing I noticed was the stock Winn grip (very similar to the G7 model). Wow, soft yet firm, no where near as mushy as previous Winn models. Better yet, it didn't bother my hands at all! I promptly marched back to the parts/service section and picked up a couple of G8 grips. They were out of the G7s (my first choice) so the G8 is going to have to do for my experiment. It is worth noting that the G7 and G8 use the exact same materials, the only difference being grip pattern (although we all know that that ins't something to take lightly and can actually make a big difference).

Anyway, I regripped my 5 iron and 19* hybrid yesterday afternoon and I'm going to the range today to give them a go.

So, in an effort to jack my own thread, two very different questions:

1) experiences with Winn grips?
2) experiences with grip pressure causing blisters and swing flaws?

Lastly, in case anyone hasn't been reading the board for a while, learn to regrip your own clubs! It makes experiment like this possible by keeping the cost WAY down. (GP Tour Velvets <$3ea, Winn G7/8 <$4ea, Fat Tire <$7 6pk)

Winn grips are real nice BUT they are AWFUL in the wet !!

I caddied for an American a few weeks ago who had never played in the rain. This day was awful: high winds & lots of heavy, heavy showers. His grips were completely fecked !! He hit one shot off 9 and the club went flying ! He was from Alabama (I think), and had never once in his life played in the rain. Welcome to Ireland, I thought !

I recently bought another Winn grip for my putter there. Y'know the model with the navy and silver top line bit to it. Real nice. They also suck in the rain, though......

Had a soft tacky Winn (Excel?) grip on my current driver and it is going in the garbage. It's "eroding" after only a month use. I'm putting on a Lamkin Dual Density.

Winn putter grips = good
Winn wraps = crap.

Both those complaints are what have kept me away from Winns in the past; they suck in the rain and wear out quickly. The G7/8 models are supposedly a different material than the Exel and classic models and are, according to the website, designed to improve grip in wet weather and last longer. I hope this is the case because, I play year round and, when I get a pass to play from the misses, I play no matter the weather.

As for wearing quickly, that doesn't scare me too much now that I can do the regrip myself. My tune may change though if I find I'm out in the garage every other week regripping...

I to used to be a Golf Pride fan, Tour Velvets on all My irons etc....then I found the Lamkin full cord softie grip. Man do i love this grip. My hands sweat alot and the conditions here in the great northeast arent always rosy...needless to say i have only one wedge that needs a new Lamkin grip....i will never use another grip again unless they stop making the lamkin cords...

Be interested to see this lamkin softie. I had GP softie cord on a 3-wood not so long ago and it was nice, though a wee bit too thick..

I had a G8 on my old driver, it got slick awful quickly. I have a G7 black on one of my wedges, I like it. I play with an assortment of grips. I have Lamkin Crosslines on my irons and I'm thinking of going all Lamkin. I have a GPTV cord on my 4wood which I rather like also. I may go cords on all the woods, maybe those neat looking red and black GP's.

As far as blisters, I'm beyond those. All calloused up now. I drive a truck at work so I get massive callouses from gripping the wheel on long trips. Not sure which ones are from golf and which are from driving anymore.

Getting too tight with my grip usually means the rest of my body is all tensed up too. I tend to get too steep when I'm all tight and especially prone to an OTT move with my drives.

ezra - is there a noticeable difference between the G7 and G8? I like the vertical grooves in the G7 better than the pattern on the G8; they feel like they would resist twisting better. It is interesting that the 8 would get slick faster than the 7 though; Winn lists the material as the same, must be due to the pattern.

Pray it never, ever rains when you are golfing. Winn grips are horrible, even more than horrible when wet.

Golf pride multi-decades are the best grips ever, period.

Do you mean the new Decade MultiCompound ala Garcia? I loved them, but the red bit just lost its tackiness very quickly, kinda annoyed me.Lyle,if you liked those, try the Dual Durometer,I have the standard on my irons and half cord on woods.

Not the direction I like. I love the red/black Golf Pride because it's corded and holds in the thick stuff. That's what I need, but I do like the Winns for the softness.

To me, grip>soft
