Why does my 17* wood sound different?

I picked up a used 17* 980F this week. It sounds totally different from my 15* and 19* 980Fs. It makes a THUD when hit, and the other make a DING.

Would the shaft make a difference, or has this head been stuffed with sound deadening material?

The 15* & 19* both have Grafalloy ProCustom in regular flex, and the 17* has a Aldila NV Fairway in stiff flex. I'm thinking of having it reshafted to match the others.

My 7 wood is the same. But it still flies.

What fairways are you using?

Edit: duh...980F's....are the 7 woods steel and the 3 and 5 Ti? I have no idea about Titty FW's...

They are all 980F steel heads. I just got the 17* (4 wood) on a lark, thinking I would have to change the shaft since it is stiff, but I hit the darn thing well!

I'm gonna try playing a couple of rounds before changing the shaft.

Chink and chunk, I have a 5 wood that makes the chink sound as well as my drivers, both 4 woods and my 7 wood make the chunk sound. The 5 wood has a greater interior volume than the other FW's though so that pretty much explains it for me. I wouldn't think the shaft has much to do with the resonance set up in the 1/200th of a second that the ball is on the face though. It would hold true with drivers were that the case, I have hit drivers side by side with 3 differing flexes and they all sound the same.

They are the same heads? One is not titanium and one steel, is it?

I think all of the 980Fs are steel, but what do I know?

My steel head has more of a thud on my TS.

My 980 F 17* Makes that sound and I have the stock speeder shaft in it.
