Thread: The shaft has rotated in my driver head

The shaft has rotated in my driver head

Recall that I got a Grafalloy Pro Launch Blue shaft put in my r7 back in June. When I picked up the club, the words "ProLaunch", etc ran along the club so that you would see them as you held the club in your hands and addressed the ball.

I have played three straight days now (yesterday in a charity scramble).

I look down at my driver yesterday and the shaft has rotated 90 degrees. The words on the shaft are now facing the side.

Has the glue gone bad in the driver head?

  2. Take it in to the shop, obviously. I can't imagine the epoxy going loose without a rattle or the head flying off (this is probably coming soon).

    Loosen up on that grip.

  3. You animal!

I had the same thing happen with some hybrids. You could actually twist the head on the shaft. Had them re-epoxied.

    Sure sounds like it.

Grab the clubhead in one hand and the grip in the other, then twist as hard as you can. You'll probably both feel and hear movement. If the shop that did it is reputable, they'll fix it for free.

    Side note:

Leaving your clubs in the trunk of your car during the summer can subject them to enough heat to break down the epoxy bond.

Yep, as mentioned, the head will be flying off shortly. Don't use it again until fixed. You can also fray (damage) the tip of the shaft if you continue. Should only cost about $5 to have fixed anywhere, and let it set for a day or two. That happened on my old TM, as I found I hit that club much better out towards the toe.

I have also heard much debate that the heat in the trunk will or will not break down the epoxy. People insist it will not break down until very, very high temps. Every clubmaker I have spoken with said it will break down in the trunk of the car over time. I have seen the heads fly off drivers at the range on very hot days on numerous occasions. I also bought my first set from a guy who left them in his trunk, the 3i and 4i were slipping down the shaft when I got them.

Temps must approach 200*F in order for this to happen, so I suppose at the height of summer, it might approach that in the trunk of your car if the car is left there for hours on end.

To me, it sounds like a bad bond, not so much the subject to heat. Just have the club re-shafted and re-epoxied. No big loss other than your time. And better off than hammering that new head into the creek off the tee.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I am a fanatic about not leaving my clubs in the car. You can ask the family. I am anal about getting my clubs out of the car as soon as I get home. They sit in a shed behind my house along with my golf shoes. (I have four pair and clean and seal them frequently along with the clubs).

The shed is in the shade most of the time. My best guess is that it would only get maybe 110 tops for an hour or two in the late afternoons between June and August. That is about as hot as the clubs would ever get.

And over the past three days (as I have played with the driver) we've had temps on the courses between 65 and 85.

I had the club fit at Golfsmith and am taking it back today. I won't hit another ball with it.

Thanks for the advice....I love it and don't want the clubhead flying through the air with me chasing behind...this is really weird because when they measured me on the machine my swing speed was only 90 mph...so I am not a fast swinger. My best drives are no longer than 280...must be bad glue.

That sounds like a bit of an arse, and the bit about having to empty your boot all the time also sounds a bit arsey.Just leave 'em in I say.

Well I drive an SUV and the clubs would be visible as I parked in various public places and as parking valets parked it when I went into restaurants etc. My main concern is them being stolen as well as I don't like them rolling around in the back of the vehicle. I'd just rather have them safe and sound in my shed...to replace it all including the custom shafts would be an incredible headache, very time consuming much less the expense as I have about $2300 invested in it all.

I don't mind bringing them round back of the house after playing...

Just don't leave them in the driveway and back over them..........

Sorry, Bravo, I could not resist.......

My clubs stay in the back of my Subaru Forester pretty much year round down here in Orlando, FL and have never had an over heated shaft/epoxy bond, yet. The only protection from the sun that they get is the roller sun shade/cover that I pull over them so they are hidden from view.

It could be the type of epoxy used or just a poor job of cleaning out the hosel prior to the shafting process that may have caused this issue. Depending on the type of expoxy, the temperature at which they start to break down changes. Fast dry epoxies break down at lower temperatures than long set epoxies, but I pretty much use the fast set times on my clubs and have not had a problem yet even down here in the heat of Florida.

My guess would be that it goes back to whomever put the clubhead on the shaft in the first place. If it was a second hand clubhead, it could have been the prior owner. I read a story about a clubmaker who was asked to reshaft Greg Norman's Wilson 8802 putter with the original shaft. After several attempts at the reshaft and head coming off again when used, the puzzled clubmaker admitted to Norman he was at his wits end and could not figure out why all of his efforts were continually resulting in a loose head. It was at that point that Norman revealed he had been pouring oil down the shaft on a regular basis to keep it from rusting from the inside out. Armed with the cause of the problem, the clubmaker was able to properly clean the hosel of the oil residue an keep the head attached to the shaft.

Hopefully the reshaft should solve your problem.
