R7 Questions

I have a few questions for Jeff or anyone else who has played the different R7's on the course. I've hit them all but only had the original quad out on the course. I am debating going back to the original, 425 or 460. My questions are forgiveness vs. workability as well as the launch of the head. I am thinking of going back to a 10.5*. I am looking for a little workability so I can hit a 10-15yd. fade or draw when I want to but mostly straight. I also want the forgiveness so I can drop the NT65-X in there and get back up around 112-114. I'm sick of being short.

BTW I just broke 80 3 times in a row and now I want to switch drivers.

With the criteria you just posted, id go for the 460. My TP is amazing, but its not a club that you'll hit "mostly straight", but its EZ to move it side to side if you know how to swing it. If your moving up in loft a bit, remember that will make the club a little more forgiving on its own, depending if your leaning to forgiveness (go for the 460) or workability (the TP), but if you just barely leaning toward workability go for a normal 425, the TP model is alot less forgiving IMO.

Didn't your mother ever teach you "if it aint broke, dont fix it"?

Honestly I'd recommend the 425, I find it's a bit more workable than the 460 without giving up too much forgiveness.

Further, having hit the quad, the 425 is closest to it. Also, the weighting precision can be a bit higher on the 425, not necessarily the launch angle, but rather the combination you are most comfortable with.

However, if you do want some forgiveness, the 460 is still plenty of workable, and for whatever it's worth, is still my main driver.

Thanks. I guess I'm leaning toward a little workability, I have the R5TP for lots of wokability. Problem is I'm just not getting any distance out of it. I've been judging this on all holes I hit driver but mostly the par4 399yd. 17th. I've parred it 4 times in a row now. Driver-5w (dead pull off a tree), 3W-8iron, 5W-6iron and finally Driver-7iron. The last was in the best position (dead center) but in between my 3 and 5wood. It's like an 8.5* 4wood.

I'm leaning towards the 425 in a 10.5. I had the quad in a 9.5, liked it, but always wished I had gone 10.5.

It's not a bad choice at all. Those TPs are just difficult clubs to hit, no matter what.

Are you going to get it from a local golf store or something?

I don't believe either is offset, or has a closed face. Not from my inspection anyway.

As far as distance that's a hard question to answer. In no wind conditions my 460 goes a little bit farther, but in windy conditions since the trajectory is lower the 425 is a little farther.

I still prefer my 460 over all though, it's just a great club.

No, ebay again but from trusted sellers only. I have a couple I'll buy from. I may pay a little more but it's worth it to know it's real. They still want $400 for the new ones. Too much, I'd rather go used and have the shaft I want.

Thanks. I'm looking at stuff from 3balls, Rockbottom, or Globablgolf. I've gotten stuff from all 3 before. Globalgolf isn't the best with condition ratings, I would be most skeptical with them. The other 2 are great though. I'm hoping to pick up a decent shaft with one of them too. I saw a few with the YS-6+, even if I don't want it I can make a few bucks off it.

Both the 460 and 425 (non TP) have closed face angles.

As for e-bay vendors, Dallas golf is a great outfit to deal with as well.

You know this for sure Lyle? On my 8.5* I don't see any. On a 10.5* it's believeable though.

Yep, for sure. They are all closed face. I have re-shafted about a dozen 460's and about 50 425's, and I always check loft and face angle when I do them. Every single one has had a closed face between 1 and 3 degrees. (nice quality control there TM)

On the TM website, when you look at the 460 tp version, they state square face angle as one of the TP features, telling me that the normal version is intentionally closed. My guess is it is suppose to be closed 2 degrees, hence my measurements between 1 and 3. Assuming that +/- 1 degree is the tolerance of manufacturing error.

Wow, and I never knew. Oh well, never caused any problems for me, though the ability to hit a draw easier than a fade makes a bit more sense. But as I said, no real problems, still pretty easy to hit a fade.
