Thread: Driver Shaft Question

  1. Driver Shaft Question

I finally received a 12* TM R540 that I intend to cut down the shaft length(To standard 3 wood length) and use as a "thriver" until I can get my swing in the groove enough to use a "real" driver.

    1. Can someone point me to a web site that has shaft characteristics for OEM shafts? I would like to read over the specs for this driver and my r7. That way, if I decide to change shafts, I can do so with some understanding of what I am doing.

    2. The new club is marked Flex M, M.A.S. High Trajectory, low torque, soft tip. What does this mean in real numbers that I can use to compare to aftermarket shafts?

I am sure my swing mechanics are all over the place, so a trip to a launch monitor isn't going to solve my problem. I am just trying to have a club for stroke play that gets me 220 and on the fairway occassionally. The r7 will be for the occassional scramble where it is acceptable to be 280 and straight 1 time in 5 and in the woods the rest of the time.

    1. Rockford's area here.
    2. High trajectory means that the ball will fly higher than other shafts. Low torque means the twisting of the shaft itself is low(lower is better for higher swing speeds), and soft tips mean that it will also launch the ball higher. Stiffer tips are directly correlated with lower ballflights.

Taylor made doesnt publish specs on thier OEM (mas II) stock shafts. From measurement I have done of them, most are more flexible than stated, have low to mid bend points and fairly soft tips even though they cliam to be firm.

Low torque in a OEM shaft will most likely fall into about the 3.5 to 4.0 range.

What is your current swing speed, most common ball flight (high, low, hook, slice), and describe your tempo and transition at the top (fast, medium, slow), once we have that info we can better help you out.

  4. I tend to hit all over the place. A high slice is my most common miss hit. I tranistion slow at the top. I have no idea what my swing speed is, but if I "tag" one, I carry 230 to 250. Most of the time, I only take a 3/4 swing because my control is so bad with a full swing. One of the reasons I bought the high loft driver was for better control. When I don't hit thin, I tend to hit irons short and high. The guy I am taking lessons is mainly concerned about consistant contact right now.
