All I ever see and hear from people is how great Scotty Cameron putters are. I have never hit a ball with one. Are they worth the money ?

Any putter isn't worth the steel it's made from if you can't sink putts with it.
I'll tell you one thing that I've gathered over the years - money will NOT buy you a short game.
If you find a putter you like, buy it. If it's 15 dollars or 450 dollars, buy it and go out and practice.
Personally, I've never found a Scotty that felt nice to me. They look nice, but the feel is muted and harsh in my hands. I'll stick with what works for me. Nothing against Scotty.

ITS WORTH EVERY PENNY (to me). Putters are an individual thing also, I couldnt justify buying a SC for a 10+ handicap. Get everything down and solid, dont go paying 400 dollars just to be cool, to someone in that position in my mind a SC or a dunlop off the rack for 50$ isnt any different.

The quality of scotty putters are great, but they are overpriced. Scotty Cameron has a cult following and that is what sets them off from some of the other putters. I will play any putter that I like to look at and feels good, I know my wife bought me a Retro Nike Unitized and cant wait for that bad boy to jump into my bag.

That's pretty much what I thought. I bought the Never Compromise for 30 bucks and putt great with it. Before that I used the same Ping Zing for 15 years. I just can't believe the prices the SC putters get on Ebay.

The ebay SC putters are "collectibles" and junk like that. To me i'll play what i putt best with, unfortunately i putted best with the SC when i was searching for a new putter (unfortunate because the freakin $$$), other then that i'd play either a YES! or a Rossa. But SC knows best for me right now.
Demon- I tried the Unitized putters, they feel like a shaped rock on a stick to me, how's it feel in your hands?

I've had my SC for less than 24hrs but so far so good. I did quite a bit of demoing so I knew that I loved the weight and feel of them.
Btw, I was the Golfsmith last night talking with the guys and one pulled one of the new Odysseys from the back room. It was the color of the new Nike Unitized (gun metal) but had the shape and feel of a SC (Studio Style Newport). Here's the kicker though, MSRP $400!! The Scotty looks like a bargain all of a sudden!![]()
They are not over rated. You will pay alot for a Scotty, although you can find some good deals if your patient on E-bay and Golfclubexchange. Go putt with a few of the models in your local store and see if they work for you. Whether its a stick with a rock at the end or a $1000 putter, whatever sinks putts for you is what you should be using. Scottys Newport 2's work for me so I play them, although Snake Eyes just released a new head thats milled with an insert that feels just as good as my Studio Style NP2. I put a T2C shaft in it and balanced it out to a 31.5" playing length and I have been greatly impressed by it. GS finally made an Anser/Newport style head with enough weight in it for me to give it a try. $40 for the head.

You know im not trying to offend you with that comment WBL, you understand my meaning.
When your just out for fun and all that (or still learning), its not like your really intense on "playing the best golf possible". When your doing this, your usually a 10+ hdcp, and when your still here, or in a similar spot in another sport, i cant see justifying buying "the best"/most expensive club.

Yes. But so is a $500 driver. Neither will make you better if you suck, in fact quite the opposite. If you don't know what model would suit you best, don't bother with spending the $$.

I didn't take any offense but I am real intense on Playing the best golf possible. Just ask my partners when I screw up a shot. I'm that way on anything I take seriously. I always play to win. And if I'm still just learning this game after 40 years I better quit. (And if it's the best putter it should help anyone). I CAN see buying the best equipment if you're serious because that's how I got good enough in other sports to win state championships etc. Why should only the "good guys" play the good equipment and the rest of the hackers play trash because it won't do us any good? Bull. You know im not trying to offend you with that comment WBL, you understand my meaning.

Well, I may suck (even though my pro said I have a good swing), but the Rapture driver HAS got me hitting the longest drives of my life straight down the middle and HAS made me better. And I've spent a whole summer trying drivers and shafts. Worth every $450 penny to me.Yes. But so is a $500 driver. Neither will make you better if you suck, in fact quite the opposite. I'm a 10+ handicap because I'm almost 60 years old and past my prime in regard to athleticism but I still hit 300 yard drives once in awhile and I have a short game that will eat you guys alive. Someday you'll get old and your handicap will start to climb and there won't be a damn thing you can do about it. Ask Jack and Arnie and some of those guys. But I'll keep buying the best equipment because it will help me slow down that rise in my score. Heck, I'm shooting the lowest scores of my life, right now.![]()

Hmm.
I'm going to disagree here, but to a point.
Should a 30 handicap be playing a $500 driver? Probably not.
But, if you find something that works for you, be it that Dunlop Loco driver from Walmart (Sling) or an overpriced POS like the Rapture (WBL), then use it. Whatever makes the ball go straight and you like standing over, then money or "awe factor" shouldn't enter into the equation.
I've tried and tried to use an expensive putter for years. I can't do it. I play to off 4, and I always - ALWAYS - come back to my trusty POS White Hot #2. I know the feel of it, I know what it's going to do (well, most of the time)
I don't think dollars mean anything when it comes to golf equipment. If you have a $1200 Ozik and hit the fairway 3 times out of 16, and I have a stock Fuji from Cleveland and I hit it 14 outta 16, it's not the shaft doing that. It's the dude holding it.
Sure, when you start playing this bloody game well and you start getting big for your britches, you get a swelled head and "think" that the big dollar stuff "must" be better, so you buy it. And you play no better, or, as Ez has touched on, you play worse. Get comfortable with something, go out and buy what you like. If it's pink, from 1987, or Brush Tees, if you play better, then keep it in the bag.
Even if the guys you play with rag you constantly, it's all comfort and what's on the scorecard at the end of the day.

I think you answered my response to this yourself. "I have a short game that will eat you guys alive". If you have that good a short game, why would you need a $450 driver? Playing a 3W and being in the FW more often than not should get the same results. and if you are hitting a club longer into the green, your short game should make up the difference. If I had to make a choice between spending $400 on a driver or a putter, and both would make an equivalent improvment on the respective aspects of my game, I'd take the putter. As it is, I'd be hard pressed to find a putter at any price that could take my $84 Odyssey out of my bag, and I'm not about to blow $400+ on a single club, no matter how highly touted. There is no way in hell that any single club is worth that much money.
Like you, I do my scoring with my short game, and if I'm usually hitting my 2nd shot before the other guys in my group, well, I've gotten used to it. I'm just turned 60, and my best golf may be behind me, then again it may not. I'm certainly going to continue to approach the game as I always have, that being that I haven't yet found my best game, and it ain't sitting in a rack a Golfsmith...
