TT Black Gold Shafts

For those who remember I was going to demo some Rifle Flighted shafts over the holidays. My friend for whom I caddy took me to a golf shop that he frequents. There are three guys who work there, a golf coach, a master craftsman of club fitting, and a PGA Pro. As soon as I began to pick their collective brains on the subject the topic quickly changed from the Rifles to the TT Black Gold shafts. They told me that I could hit any of their personal clubs that day. All three had the Black Gold shaft! One had Nike's blades and TW wedges, the other had Ping's new blades and Cleveland wedges. The Pro's clubs were not there as he was selling them, but he had Taylor Made irons, and was looking for something different. I was absolutely amazed. The pro explained that TT combined their technology with the Rifles and produced what he considered "hands down the best shaft on the market for its price." He said the Project X shafts might have higher tolerances but that except for the cost we would never know the difference. The coach challenged me to swing his 8 iron, and then his 4 iron. I can say that had I not known the difference, I would have assumed both swings were with the 8 iron. I did the same with the Nike irons going from the 9 iron to the 3 iron. Amazing. The Black Gold shafts are the real deal, (IMO). Eddie, the guy I was with, ordered the shafts right there, on the spot. He was sold after four swings! There is no doubt that I will be installing these into my MP 60s. I wish I could remember all that we talked about for the 2 hours we were there, but the point of this is to urge anyone who has the opportunity to at least demo these shafts, I do not think you will be disappointed. Their feel and consistency is unmatched in anything I have swung. It made no difference which clubhead was attached, the energy transfer was phenomenal.

Note: I played a round with TT Dynalites, TT DG S300, and have tried Rifles, but they were not flighted, before I hit these shafts.

I've heard lot's of good things about those shafts but I think they're starting to get put into more clubs now so more are noticing.

Funny how TT had to get RP's technology from the Rifle shafts to produce something like this. Ironic at the same time that Rifle didn't make it, and TT did.

Go figure.

Great story, BTW.

I have been pimping these ever since I first tried them. Best irons shafts I have ever played. Rock solid yet softer feeling than graphite.

Rock, that is basically what the PGA Pro said. Seems to me they should be the best of both worlds...at least this month.

Jeff, it will be worth your time to at least give them a swing. I was impressed. Especially since the two shop owners and the pro who stopped by had them "in the bag". They all claimed to have gained distance due to a more efficient transfer of energy, I cannot yet vouch for that claim, they weren't my clubs, but they sure felt great.

B,

Were they hard stepped or anything? I've thought about trying these in my wedges.

Rifle flighted have a systematic theme throughout the set where the long irons are lower kickpoint to get the ball airborne easier, while the scoring irons are a bit higher kick for a more penetrating trajectory, all having the same feel throughout.

It really works. I was a skeptic, but I'm sold and they're firmly in my bag after years of playing, what I consider now, lifeless iron shafts, S300's.

I still can not figure out why TT and others are calling the Black Gold the first TT stepless shaft. I have a set of irons 1 iron through Utility Wedge (60*) shafted with True Temper Rocket stepless shafts (stepless steel "bubble shafts" no less). Yes, back in the 90's I carried a Driver, a putter, and 12 irons. Additonally, TT made the Formula One shaft that was stepless just a few years ago and offered until recentely. Why is TT claiming the Black Gold as their first stepless shaft?

Tim,

If memory serves me, those shafts were internally stepped. The Black Gold aren't. Splitting hairs, but I'm pretty sure that's the deal.

If you cut one of those other shafts lengthwise, you'd see the stepping on the inside.

I will have to take a look inside again, but I do not recall their being steps inside the shafts when I assembled them (the Rockets) unless they consider the bubble portion of the shaft steps. Of course, I can never make out the internal "rifleing" in Rifles either when I have a look down the shaft.

Rock, sorry for the delay, vacation was goooood! What is hard-stepped? They have shafts just for wedges if you would like. Eddie ordered 3-lob wedge and the Pro explained that they have different shafts for the wedges, would that be hard-stepped?

I really need to start looking into steel shafts for my irons, I have some naff graphite ones in at the moment. Is there as many variations in steel shafts as there are in graphite?

Hard stepping is tipping the shafts to play slightly firmer/less whippy. You can hard step wedge shafts as well (mine are).

What did Ed pay for his set?
