Do I need a newer driver?

I currently use a 983K and I really like it. I like the smaller head size and the shape sets up wonderfully. However I've started thinking. Am I limiting myself and my game (at least off the tee) by using a club that has a smaller sweet spot? I've had great days using this club and not so great days. It all goes back to my swing; I don't blame the club for that. I am NOT looking for a game improvement club of any kind. I prefer to fix the swing, not put a bandaid on it.

I was at the range today and I was hitting the 983K fairly well. I can't say much for distance (who knows with those range balls) but this is something that I've started thinking about. Would a newer club, like the 905R/T/S be more beneficial? Am I missing out on extra distance? I know this is more in a consistent swing, but I'm wondering if there would be a marked difference from what I'm playing now.

I'm not looking for an excuse to buy a new driver, but I'm looking for an answer rather to a question that I feel deserves to be asked. In fact, I'll probably be buying new irons sometime in the next month or two. I don't have immediate plans to replace the 983K.

Thanks.

Hit the 905R as a demo and see how you like it. If you go over to Golfer's Warehouse in Warwick they will let you take one out if you give them a credit card. They had just about every loft/shaft combo available. A 9.5 with a YS-6 stiff would be a good one to try. You could grab it on a Sat. and play with it on the range and course, then return it during the week. You probably wouldn't want to buy it there, you can save well over $100 on Ebay.

You working tomorrow? I'll be heading out to play around 10:30-11.

I fight with this question every 8 months. In all honesty, I come back to this:

"I should have never sold my Big Berha 8*".

In my opinion, which isn't worth squat, it's all what your comfortable with. That being said, if you're hitting 2 of 16 fairways, you might want to consider something with a bit more forgiveness.

BUT, you can also take 1/4 of that money and take a few lessons, it would probably do you more than getting a driver that helps hide faults rather than taking them head on with lessons and limiting them.

It's all up to you. Are you gonna gain alot of distance? Probably not. Are you gonna get lazier in your swing? Almost certainly.

Go out and hammer on a few. They'll feel great. But, if the old Titty still hits them out there for you, there's no sense spending money you don't have to.

It took me months to convince some guys on this site of this fact. Months.

I'd say that you probably won't gain much distance if any on well struck shots with the R, T or S over your current driver, but with a slight miss hit you'd definetly notice the bigger sweetspots on those models over your own. If you prefer a smaller head then I'd say forget the R and give the T and the S a go. You can pick these up dirt cheap on Ebay now or maybe Ez could find you one on Global.

Nice post, Rockford! Yeah, you're probably right. I think I at least deserve to hit one on the range or even on a course. But what you're saying is true. If my swing was consistently good enough, I would be playing the K very well. I've had some rounds where I've creamed some drives and wondered where all that power came from.

Ezra-

Unfortunately, I do work tomorrow. Sucks. I checked the weather as I wanted to play on Sat or Sun and it looks like rain. But tomorrow is SUNNY!! Unless I manage to blow off work and call in sick or something I'll have to pass. Where are you playing by the way? Thanks for the info on Golf Warehouse. I was about to send you a PM about a golf shop in our area. Nothing around here that I know of other than Dicks.

Oh, yeah. If you like the T or S I could find a head dirt cheap and you can pick any shaft you like. I could probably put together one with a midrange (Grafalloy, Graphite Design, UST) shaft for under $150 and a premium (Fuji Fit on, PM 702, Possible Mistubishi Rayon) for around $200. Too bad I got rid of that Accra T60, I think you would have liked that shaft. You have a smooth swing, unlike my overtorqued mess. lol.

I played the same 983K as yours but with the regular flex Prolite 3.5 shaft before I bought a 905T.

The 983K is a great driver. So is the 905T. The only difference I have noticed is that the 905T is less draw biased, although I can still hook the piss out of it if I get on it too hard. I don't think I have gained any total distance, just a little less right to left.

If you are interested in selling your 983K (cheap), please let me know, as I have been wanting to try the Prolite 3.5 in a stiff flex.

Will do, Siberian. Quick question about your prolite. I know yours was a regular flex, but was it stiffer than other regular flexes? Sometimes I think it might be too stiff, but then I start hitting nice drives and all is forgotten. I'm just wondering if those shafts are stiffer than other brands within the same group.

So what is your verdict? Do you like the T better than the K? What was your motivation for upgrading?

Up until two summers ago I used the same driver for 8 or more years (Yonex ADX 200) because none of the smaller metal headed drivers could compete with it (light weight graphite head) for distance and straightness. I hammered that club. Then I found TaylorMade R580's (not XD and 400cc) for $200 (later dropped to $150 and then lower yet) so bought one. Unbelieveable! I hit one 326 yards. I was amazed. Straight down the middle. So this summer I thought I'll go to the 460cc Launcher Comp (sold the R580 like an idiot). What a letdown! I then got a G5 and liked it but nothing I touched could do as well as that cheap R580. Finally in October I got smart and went on a launch monitor and found my club. Longest I've ever hit (Rapture) but huge $$$$.

Bottom line. Take your club with you and try them on a launch monitor using your club as baseline. If you can't find anything better keep it!!

Here's an S with a Graf blue in very good shape. I've bought 2 drivers from these guys and this one should be in a solid 9 condition.

http://www.globalgolf.com/Product/Go...spx?gd=3&mid=4

They also have a few T's. One in a 10.5 that has some skymarking for $110. I've found they are a better option than Ebay. You may pay 5-10% more but you know what you are getting from these guys.

I'd also consider giving a Launcher Ti a demo. What I saw in your swing was the tendency to hook. I'd say a stiffer shaft and a dead square, no draw bias head would benefit. You also hit a fairly high trajectory and might either befefit from dropping a degree in loft or a lower trajectory shaft.

All Titty bore-throughs will play stiffer than non bore-throughs.

I like the fact that the 905T goes left less than the 983K. The only thing worse than a 50 yard hook off the tee is a 50 yard slice.

My motivation for upgrading was all Warbirdlover's fault.
