Rethinking Club Setup

I was striking the ball pretty well today and boy do love hitting 3irons. I was just hitting them so well I am half debating a 2iron-PW setup. Just driver and 3W for woods. The thing that really gets me thinking, besides the workabitlity, is the consistant distance. Every time I pull my 3iron I can count on 205-215 yds. dead up the middle off the tee. Increase that to 225 with a 2iron and I'll be destroying mid length par 4's.

Another mistake I made was hitting Twofast's 60* wedge quite a few times. We were messing around for 10minutes or so on the 18th. before leaving. I hit it out of the bunkers, near full flops 15yds. and 15ft. high, chips that land 6ft. from the hole and skip check to inches. I may need to make room for a 60* again also. They sure are fun.

Ez, if thats wat your thinking. Try the 54 and 60 in your wedges to replace your 52/56. Just like how me and Demon are setup. The 54 you can hit all the shots that you do with the 52/56, and as you say, the 60 is just so much fun

(obv me and demon know what were doing)

Okay, you got me to thinkin'. I have a Sun Mountain Speed Cart. Couldn't one come up with a drop down leg under the push handle for support and a mounting plate for a loft/lie machine? Get one of those bags with the outside putter clip to hold the bending bar. Then, between holes... or even shot to shot... you could turn your 3-iron into a 2-iron or your 56 degree wedge into a 60 degree wedge.

Man... I'm gonna be rich!!!!!

I hit the long irons like crap and only need the PW and 56º so substitute 2 Nickent hybrids in there and my bag looks like below signature...

I may get that 60* off Twofast if he wants to get rid of it. I'll probably just end up eventually filling out one complete set of irons 2-PW and interchanging with a 5W depending. Wedge setup is always in question lately. I have that 56* coming but I think I could play a 59 or 60 better out of those high bunkers at that course. I got out and on the green from a huge lip, high as my head with that 60* today. That is pretty much one of the most difficult bunker shots I will face here in New England.

The trick to figuring out what to carry, is very simple really, carry 16-20 clubs, that makes the decisions much easier.

Ez,

simple bags are an advantage, shot selection is easier

2-pw
52
58
3w
driver
putter

I have had this bag for donkeys years and messed with everything last year but still went back to what I know.I revolve the 2iron with a 5 wood depending on conditions and a 56/58 depending on bounce required

That sounds pretty good. What bounce do you play in the 56 and 58? I have a 56-10 MP-R on the way. I was debating bending it to a 57-11.

Also what conditions would warrant a 2i/5W swap. I tend to have a little more need for the 5W in wet conditions. I'll probably look into the 2-4irons in either my model Miura's or the newer 1006 model which has a little more mass in the bottom of the cavity, possibly may have a little wider sole, not sure. Of course I could always sell mine and try to find a 2-PW. They aren't cheap though.

Ez, I am feeling your pain. Right now I have 15 clubs in the bag as I can not decide what to get rid of. My Wedge set up is 52*, 56*, 60* but I really can not afford to be without either my 4 iron or 24* Hybrid as it leaves too large of a distance gap. My current line of thinking is a 54*/58* wedge setup or a 53*/57* wedge setup. It will require me to buy OEM versus my normal components as I can not find a set of component wedges with the loft/bounce combinations I am looking for. Cleveland 588's are a steel right now, and Tour Edge has some sweet black nickel wedges that are about half the cost of most wedges out there. Decisions, decisions, decisions. My only fear is that I will once again be leaving too large of a gap between my PW and 54* which is why I was leaning towards the 53*. Maybe 53*/58*?

I have no idea what I am doing!

I do not use standard lofts, I hit them mark the yardage, bend it till it falls into the yardage I want. Even though I play a 60* wedge, its actually bent to 59*, 9 Iron is 1* weaker as well as the 2, 4, and 5.

Ez, I'm thinking the same. I've got a 2-SW set of Toski clubs (had the heads for years) I just had re-shafted with Nippon 950's and I am seriously considering playing the 2-PW with driver, 3 wood, 52/56.

When I played these irons before my 3 years off, that freakin' 2 iron was money for me. Why can't it be again?

I'm already working on selling my 18º hybrid and possibly my rac irons.

Simple is better, like Dave said.

Time will tell....
