Don't get me wrong, he won the PGA fair and square, no beef whatsoever.

No, my query is more along the line of why not someone from Japan? Golf in Korea is a fairly recent endeavor while it has been around in Japan for at least a 100 years (albeit not the most prolific of games).

A long time ago players from the British Isles dominated the game, then Francis Ouimet came along and the resurgence of American players up until the domination of Jack Nicklaus and now again with Tiger Woods. But after Nicklaus there was a shift back to Europe with players like Ballesteros and Langer.

In Asia golf was dominated by Japan for a long time. Tsuneyuki Nakajima had an excellent opportunity to win the Open Championship until he found the green bunker on the Road Hole, I think he needed five shots to get it in the hole. I was actually in Japan at that time and can clearly remember the TV announcer completely braking down and crying uncontrolably on air. A little later Jumbo Ozaki dominated Japanese golf, but he was heavily involved with the yakuza and hardly ever competed outside Japan and was even once accused by no less than Greg Norman of cheating. After that he never played outside Japan again.

Shigeki Maruyama cetainly looked like he had the game required (shot a 58 in US Open qualifier) . Yet, instead of a Japanese player being the first to capture a major title it was a Korean, and not even their #1 player.

I guess that - in a rather perverted sense - truly prooves what a special position TW occupies withing the game. But does anyone here have any theories as to why a Japanese player haven't been able to brake through?

The PGA announced that the Viking Classic has been canceled. No make up date will be scheduled. Would this have been the case had it occurred earlier in the season, or in a larger television market? Somehow I doubt it would have. But the facts that the event is played in Madison,Ms. and not in San Diego,Ca. or Tampa,Fl. coupled with the season practically being over for the year added up to it being a throw away event in the mind of the PGA.

Personally I don't think its fair. Its not fair to the community which needed to economic boost, its not fair to the professional players who needed the winnings to attempt to earn or keep their PGA cards, and its not fair to the volunteers who sat in the rain all week long. Yes I was one of those volunteers, one of literally an army of them. I was amazed at the number of people it takes to host a PGA event, 99% of whom are not getting paid to do so. Would they have had as many volunteers available next weekend? Probably not, but they could have made the neccesary arangements.

I am very curious to hear the PGA's reasoning for cancelling the event entirely.

Ok, I'll post my observations from the Viking Classic on here. I'll be working the driving range each day of the tournament. I was undecided where I wanted to work, finally decided the driving range would be best as I'd be able to observe the pros warming up and see what they work on.

Day 1--

Woody Austin is a funny guy. He was standing right in front of the tent where we were handing out the bags of balls. Him and his caddy were cracking jokes and clowning around the whole time they were out there. He does not take a divot with his irons. He hit 4 bags of balls, 35-45 balls per bag and did not even disturb the grass where he was hitting from. He and his swing coach were working on his ball positioning most of the time.

Charles Howell III is a machine. He had to have gone through 12 bags of balls today at least. He was on the driving range and practice green for well over 6 hours today. He also went way off to the far end by himself, just him and his caddy.

John Daly is skinny as a rail now. He still crushes the ball but good grief, somebody make the man eat a sandwich!

Brad Faxon spent more time between shots than he did hitting balls. He was constantly stopping and having an analyzing session with his caddy.

James Driscoll has a future digging ditches if golf doesn't work out for him. The man was digging perfectly straight and uniform trenches with his irons. Each shot would be placed right behind the previous shots divot, over and over until he would reach the rope boundary of the hitting area. Then he'd just move over 1 inch and start all over again. It looked almost like crop circles, only in a straight line. Perfectly straight like they were laid out with a GPS.

In general, the shot dispersion of the pros is insane. Watching them hit 20 balls with a certain club, you could have gone and laid a baby blanket over 90% of the balls they had just hit. You'd hear the caddy tell one of them how far a flag was after checking with the range finder. Then watch them place ball after ball within 10 feet of it.

The majority of the pros play the ProV1x. We handed out far more bags of them than any other ball. We only had 3 ask for a TaylorMade ball and the PGA or the Viking Classic didn't order any at all. Srixon sent 12 cases of balls, 12 dozen to a case and not one pro requested them. Nike sent 6 cases of practice balls and nobody asked for them either. Callaways shipment of balls is running late and hasn't arrived yet. But only 4 asked for them. The most requested balls were the ProV1x, then ProV1's, then Bridgestone's, but Charles Howell III went through most of those. Every ball manufacturer except Bridgestone stamped practice on their balls. The Bridgestone balls are all Tour B330 S's, without practice on them anywhere. And yes, I will be smuggling a handful of them home every evening, :D

Watching golf, I often find myself not really rooting "for" someone... but sort of against someone. I don't know why... but there are a number of players that I just don't like. When they play, I'm not sitting there saying "shank it! shank it!'. But if they are in contention, I'll almost always pull for the other guy... and for no good reason. To name a few...

Sean O'Hair - Dunno why... seems like a nice young man. Never "did" anything that I didn't approve of... just don't like him!

Tim Clark - Again... nothing personal I guess... but if he's in contention, I pull for the other guy.

Ryan Moore - Maybe it's the hat and beard? I dunno... don't like him!

Chad Campbell - Again... no reason to not like him... but I don't!

There are a few others. There really is no reason that I can give as to why I don't like these guys. It's not a I think they're an ******* thing like Monty or a crybaby thing like Sergio. I just always find myself rooting against them. Any of you have players that you can't stand for no good reason? :p:p:p:p:p

I would like to personally take this opportunity and thank you all for the continued support and dedication you have given us through these past 2 years. November 18th, 2007 was a day I will never forget, but will always wish that I could. My brother, PFC Marius L. Ferrero, gave his all for this country and for those less fortunate than him. Even though he was younger than I, he showed me what it means to help others and to care about others even if they don't appreciate or even notice to care that you are helping. He was KIA while on a patrol mission in Baqubah, Iraq. He died while giving small Iraqi children toys and food and trying to promote good will.

I remember him telling me before he left back to Iraq, that he wasn't scared. That he knew what he had to do, and that he had to do it. Even if he didn't agree with what was going on, he felt it was his duty. Mario's Soldiers and I have made a promise to Marius, that we will never forget him and we will continue his last mission on earth... Helping those less fortunate and promoting good will.

Each season we host a Charity Golf Tournament at Doral Golf Resort and Spa to collect money and donations for children around the world. This fall (Oct. 25th, 2009), I would like to invite you to come participate in a 4-man Scramble Golf Tournament. And, even if you don't play golf, come out and enjoy a full day of relaxation at the resort as "OFFICIAL GUESTS" of Mario's Soldiers for Free. This will be a great event, for an even better cause! I really hope you can come and enjoy the day with us.

For Player Registration visit MariosSoldiers.org ($100/player with this email)

For "Official Guest" Information visit our website or call 305-986-1928 or just visit our Registration Table on the day of the event. (Free!)
