Royal Troon will always be memorable to me as the first course I saw after entering Scotland for the first time. We flew into Prestwick after darkness and drove to visit Royal Troon the next morning.
Unfortunately, I cannot offer any rating whatsoever, since I didn't play the course. We were quoted a price of 220 lb/sterling to play. I'm sorry, but there just isn't a course on the globe where I would pay $440 to spend the day.
I fully appreciate the history of the course and will freely admit that I was somewhat awestruck by the visit. I must say, though, that I was unimpressed by the starkness of the outer appearance of the clubhouse. The lack of any effort at landscaping somehow just made it appear as "unfinished" to me.
