Thread: What got you interested in golf? A woman's perspective?

What got you interested in golf? A woman's perspective?

A few years ago when I started playing, I took my girlfriend out to the course to see if it would spark some sort of interest in her. I was hoping maybe she'd get into it and we'd have something we could do together for fun. She took some tips from her dad, we went over how to swing correctly and then spent some time on the range to get her comfortable. When she was ready to give it a go, we got on the course and she did as well as you'd expect anyone to their first time out. She actually did seem to have some natural ability and an understanding of the mechanics, and wasn't grounding the club every time or swinging with limp wrists like almost everyone seems to do the first time they pick up a club. However, by the time we got to the fifth hole she was beyond frustrated and swore off golf forever. I don't think she's touched a club since.

I've suggested lessons and practice, assuring her that once you get the hang of it it can actually be enjoyable, but she still "hates golf." She's always been an exceptional athlete, playing varsity softball and soccer in high school, so it isn't beyond her physical abilities. She just seems to have put up a complete mental block and I'm not going to force her to do something she doesn't want to.

I have no intentions of coming across as sexist, and fully understand women play golf for the same exact reasons as men do. I'd just like to hear from a woman's perspective why she might play or talk to another woman about picking the game up. Maybe it's not for everyone, and like I said I'm not going to force her. I just think she would enjoy it if she gave it an honest shot.

    I'm curious with bluebled here.

My wife plays, but she just took an interest so she could go to the course and do something instead of walk along. *shrug* Just as well, she plays pretty well now, beats me on executive courses from time to time.

But as blue said, she still doesn't really like golf. Its got me perplexed.

Your wife beats you? That is impressive, considering what a good player you are.

I bought my wife a set of clubs as well. After a couple of lessons and some instruction from me, I really thought she was hitting the ball quite well for a beginner. She was getting deadly with her hybrid. But she just doesn't seem to enjoy it either and hasn't picked up her clubs or been on the course in over 3 months. And we live on a course, she could walk down and play or hit the driving range whenever she wanted to, if the desire so hit her. I'm perplexed as well. She was doing so well, I figured she was going to get hooked like I am, but it didn't happen?

When I'm missing its always a high right shot, and the greens on these executives are tiny. So yeah, sometimes she'll get me. Her biggest problem is distance, driver only goes about 150-170.

Wait were you being sarcastic? o.0

Yup, she has her own set of clubs, fitted and everything that her dad bought her for Christmas one year. He is a big time golfer, membership, plays multiple times a week for 30+ years, single digit handicap and shoots in the low 70s. Same thing with her grandfather. He was really excited when I took her out to play, but I've always wondered if maybe she wrote golf off as "guy thing," something only her dad does. Maybe she doesn't think it's supposed to be something she can be good at?

I have tried to gte my wife interested in the golf but the force is strong in her & she resists. I bought her the pink bag she wanted, got her some nice Ping G2 woods, TM R7 hybrid, putter, etc etc. She doesn't mind going to the range once a month but that's about it. I have taken her to the course & out of 9 holes she might play 4 & then gets bored. I don't understand it either, but then I also don't understand her fascination with making photo albums or scrapbooks.

  10. my fathers second wife took up the game a few yrs ago.but her main reason i think was to spoil the time me and my father had as me and her dont get along that well.my father left when i was around 9 and we didnt spend much time together untill i was in my late 20`s and started working together and he took up the game.

i dont think his wife has picked up a clubsince me and him quit playing toghter.(he had alot of medical problems over the last 7-8 yrs.)

my mother also went with me once but her main reason was to spend more time with me.i think she was a little jealous of the time i was spending with my father at the time.

but i think man or woman if you are someone who is easily frustrated this is not gonna be a game they like.
