Thread: Dottie Pepper vs Annika Sorenstam (Shell's WWoG)

  1. Dottie Pepper vs Annika Sorenstam (Shell's WWoG)

I was watching a replay of the 1996 Wonderful World of Golf match between Dottie Pepper and Annika at Kiawah Island on TGC.

At the beginning of the broadcast, they gave a quick overview of each player and (not surprisingly) described Dottie Pepper as "one of the LPGA's fiercest competitors."

They then showed a very short clip of Pepper staring down a spectator with an evil look at the (IIRC) 1992 Kraft Nabisco Dinah Shore and the voice over said something like "...where she stared down a heckling spectator and went on to win..."

I Googled, but couldn't find anything about the incident. Does anyone know anything about it?

Also, I never realized that Pepper is only 42. No wonder I thought she "looked good for her age."

  2. My DVR picks up anything with LPGA or Women's golf, so I caught that match too. You can tell that those two did not like each other even then. Remember that two years before this match at the Solheim Cup was Dottie's "YES!" after Laura Davies missed her putt. (not that Annika played that year, but I am sure she knew about it) It was during the 1998 Solheim Cup that Annika put Dottie's picture up on a punching bag in Europe's team room.
Aside from that, how crazy were the differences in the women's golf game now versus then? Their length was about 50 yards shorter off the tee than most of the women now. Dottie carried a 3 iron, I would bet a ton of money not one LPGA player now carries a 3 iron. And don't even get me started on their clothes. Yes, I know it was 1996, but that is no excuse, it was bad for even then. I loved that they were miked. They didn't even have to comment after any of Dottie's shots, she did it for them. Annika, per her usual self, was focused and quiet. You could really see how shy she was back then. I was fun to watch.
I did hear the comment about Dottie at the Dinah Shore. I am sure some fan made a comment like, "Snottie Dottie," which was her nickname on the tour!

  3. Yeah, the amount that Dottie talked cracked me up. She makes Cristie Kerr look like an introvert. She had something to say for every single shot and every single putt. My favorite was "Bite like a police dog!" And she kept talking even after the ball had stopped and she was walking to her next shot.

  4. I love you both, but anyone who's watching tapes of a 1996 golf match needs to get a life.

Says she who had to sit through Kit Kitridge with two eight year olds this afternoon. My excuse is that it was raining.

    A life? What's that?
"Maybe he could sell it on Ebay, say it looks like the Virgin Mary, Sergei Fedorov, or Leno."

  6. Gotta love TiVo.

And unlike 99% of everything else on TV, I didn't know what the ending would be after the first 5 minutes. Besides, what else am I going to do at 1 a.m. when I can't sleep? So I set up the Boomerang, practiced putting, and watched some girls with bad haircuts play golf.

    P.S. What's a Kit Kitridge?

  7. It's a movie currently in theaters. Suitable for 8 year old girls.

I have an 8 year old girl and she hasn't mentioned it....whew!
There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

  8. So, there are theaters all across the country filled with 18 year old girls?!?!?!

    Oh, wait, nevermind.

    Damn.

Real golfers have been known to watch the 1965 WWOG Hogan vs. Snead match so many times that they wore out their VHS tape and had to buy it again on DVD.

Sometimes it's either that or be forced to watch HGTV.

Could not agree with you more...see, if we had more live LPGA we wouldn't have to resort to matches from over 10 years ago!

Well, I suppose it's better than sellavision. For one, I don't care how many pieces are in my takeaway...
