Cast your mind back to 1999...

You are playing in The Open at Carnoustie and all around you have fallen away. You have played brilliantly all day and have a 3 shot lead with just 480 yards between you and The Claret Jug. You need only a 6 to WIN. You blast your driver way right but still have a shot to layout. Instead of the lay-up you choose a 2 iron off a difficult sloping lie and your approach rickochets off the grandstand and into Barry Burn. You weigh up the situation and decide to get into the burn to see if the shot could be played.

The Open is on the line and you decide to drop, making (from memory a fantastic up and down to record) a 7.

What if you had hit that shot from the burn?

You know what I remember the most about Van de Velde, he was unconscious with the putter that week. I have never seen someone make so many bombs.

That was before I started playing golf, so I didn't watch golf on TV then. It did make The Golf Channels Top 10 Meltdowns, though. Van de Velde looked like somebody had hit him between the eyes with a 2x4.

It kinda reminds me of the 10 I made on a par 5 yesterday. What a hack job.

Do you know the difference between a BMW and a porcupine? The porcupine has its' pricks on the outside.

Yeah, that putt he made to get in the playoff was clutch.

As far as a week of crazy putting goes, for me nobody can top Retief at Southern Hills -- except the 72nd hole of course.

It made my par on that hole all the sweeter.
