I play with an open stance with all my clubs. Shoulders, hips, and feet. Many great players, Nicklaus, Normal, price, all played with an open set up.
Just be sure that if your shoulders are going to be open, that your hips and feet are open the same amount.
I find playing with a slightly open set up allows my hip to clear better and I put a much better move on the ball.
Try it.

OK, get ready for a little steam coming out the ears...

Here's the deal. I play with slightly open shoulders but to hit a straight shot I align right of my target, no not closed. I am actually slighty open to my swing path, not my target. My clubface is aimed at the target. So now I swing along that path and it's essentially right of my target... but the face is at the target. This is how I find the "inside/inside" path.

I used to just put the shaft across my shoulders to get my aim when I had trouble. I still do it once in a while, especially when I'm trying to hit a very tight fade off the tee. In that case I'd go same shoulder setup but left of target, face at target.

I use a "thought" which might help.

At setup...
1. shoulders back, and imagine moving the base of the spine forwards (as if someone is pushing your spine inwards 1" above your belt).

2. Wiggle your spine and shoulders into a position so that they FEEL square and upright.

R.

LOL, this is so you are preventing your over-the-top move.
