It's that kind of purely mechanical lesson that screws me up...my last lessons focused on teaching me how to play by feel...and my teacher never got into all of those mechanical positions...

I love Hogan more than anyone but I cannot have such swingthoughts as 'wiping the window with my left ass cheek'...

I absolutely believe Hogan is the master of golf fundamentals. I now read 5 fundamentals at the beginning of each year to get my swing in check and practice the fundamentals at home religiously when I am having problems and even when I am not. Although outside of the grip it is absolutely the last thing I want to think about on the course and the second it slips into my mind usually marks the beginning of a bad round.

I just read Bob Rottella's - "Golf is not a game of perfect" this year, and it will likely become the new cornerstone for my thought process on the course. Namely the bit about finding the smallest target. I have always done this on the greens and short game, which has always been the best part of my game. What amazes me is that it never really crossed my mind on anything other than short game. My mind has likely been too cluttered with the mechanical and technical part of the golf swing. I thought I would have a hard time getting over this, but have not. It has made my game very peaceful and I have come to blame most bad shots with not focusing enough on the "Smallest target" and reverting back to the technical side. I think I am too good of a "feel" player to not make it the foundation for my course play. Sounds like a great instructor.

I really like the tip mentioned above and think it may help as it is one of my major flaws. Even practiced it a bit today, although I will simply try to rid my mind of this once I step on the first tee tomorrow morning.

edit 1 - Much more peaceful game when the height of your swing thought is "Grip it, and rip it"

I tried it today and it seemed to work. I'm ripping drive after drive right up the middle. I then tried my "antislice drill" trying to hit a draw. Hit a few and started hooking, yikes. Haven't seen that hook rear it's head in a while. The thing I have to remember is if I want to hit a draw, I have to swing even more fluid and easy. Try to rip it and I get handsy and hook it.

This powerdrill though seems to get me to intiate the downswing with the lower body a lot easier. The wind was blowing in and the range was uphill. I was hitting them mid/low boring trajectory off a low tee landing right between 200 and 250 and running past the 250. I'll take those every time.

Lovely lesson on how to execute the perfect reverse pivot.

Not that that's a bad thing. It's what this "stack and tilt" nonsense is all about.

It's what I'm trying to "un-learn".

I believe in the modern "two-pivot" swing, where the right hip is the pivot point on the backswing, and the left hip is the pivot point on the follow-through.

But what the heck do I know?

Nuttin'!

So you are saying Hogan had a reverse pivot?

i dont see a reverse pivot in that drill.. nor the stack and tilt, which by the way isnt a reverse pivot either

Pa Jayhawk:

Sounds like you and I have the same type of game. The closer I get to the green the more confident and focused I become. I am a great putter, chipper, and pitcher of the golf ball. I know how to "score ugly" because of my short game. I too have read Rotella's books and quickly applied his ideas to these areas of my game. I am going to refocus my efforts to include "Conservative strategy, ****y swing" to the long game.

i dont think its ever intended to be a swingthought that stays with you, but merely an initial thought to establish the mechanics and feeling of the move.. once you get used to it, i would imagine you would never think about wiping windows.. it just happens.. and obviously this thought should never come onto the course

It certainly has become a big part of my game. I SCRAMBLE on the course. It has usually becomes a method of trying to get the ball inside of 100 yards with a good lie in the fewest strokes possible and then relying on the best part of my game to get the ball in the hole. This works great for me in match play and likely freaks out my opponents and probably a big reason I do well in match play. Unfortunately it does not benefit me as well in stroke play.

Thanks again for this link. I told Twofast today at the range I was swinging out of my @ss. Had a really good session and it's helping a ton with staying connected and using my lower body. Longest drives I've ever hit on the range, had to start lining up across to the corner because I was hitting driver into the woods.

Wow. That was the first time I had ever heard that analogy of what to do with the hips and I have read just about everything. I can only guess that this guy has it correct. I do EXACTLY what he was describing not to do. Thanks for the link. Time to see how far off I am.

Also, I move that the "Stack-n-Tilt" be amended to the much more golfer-friendly "Stack-n-Whack!"
