Same distance with every iron...

I don't usually come on here but i've just finished my GCSE's so have got 12 weeks to kill and want to get back into the golf!

Went to the range the other day and found i was hitting roughly the same yardage with all my irons. I can hit the wedges sweetly most of the time, but the rest of my clubs seem to 'pop up' into the air then plummit back to the ground again.

I can hit about 110 yards wih my pitching wedge, and i can feel that i made good contact with it on a consistant basis. With the bigger clubs, i hit only a few yards further, but i can tell i hit it bad, because the club vibrates right up the shaft.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

You've got some serious problem there, whatever it is.

Do you have any friends who play a lot? Let them, or even a sympathetic stranger on the range, hit some shots with your irons to see what they see. How's your swing? Can you hit a golf ball reasonably well? I'm not saying that to be a smart-ass, but if you're getting no distance, and a lot of vibration, you could be hitting the ball very poorly. Even then I would think you would hit some decent shots out of pure luck.

My bet is that there is something really wrong with your irons, and the obvious answer is to get someone who knows equipment to look at them.

FYI - in case you don't know - you should get 10 yards or so between irons. If your PW goes 110, then the 9-iron should go 120, the 8 should go 130, etc.

I've got a full set of Howson Attacker Irons, steel shafted. I obviously know they're not the best, far from it, but i'm not going to go spending a fortune on a set of irons when i'm no expert yet. There is nothing wrong with the irons at all, some magazine said they are the best irons you can get for under £150.

My grandad got my into golf and he has hit some balls with my irons and he hits them sweetly, so i know it is me. I think it might be because i am not sweeping the ball enough, not making good contact. Like i said, i can hit my wedges really well, but when i try and transfer the same basic swing mechanics to my other irons it just doesn't seem to work.

OK, so there's nothing wrong with the clubs. You definitely need to get some knowledgable eyes watching you swing. I can't imagine how you could be swinging your other irons so poorly when it sounds like you swing your wedge pretty well.

are you having problem hitting from 9i-3i?
or is it more like 6i-7i?

the length of irons determine the swing plane and as you go down the iron set, the plane flattens out. of course the ball will be further away from you and forward in your stands as well.

You're scooping the ball, that has to be it. That basically causes all irons to go the same distance because you are hitting with the leading edge of the club, so it really doesn't matter what the loft is.

Would hitting them off the leading edge call them all to 'pop up' as the OP describes it, though? Surely that'd cause the ball to fly low?

The only two things I can think of where the ball has popped-up like that come from hitting down way too steeply on the ball, or hitting it so fat you slide the club right under the ball and fire it straight upwards. The former I've seen more with drivers and woods than irons though, and the latter I've only ever seen happen with wedges on soft ground.

Are you standing too close with the irons? Wedge is comfortable for you... right? The longer the iron, then the longer the shaft... and the further from the ball you need to be. Standing the same distance for all of them will result in a steeper swing and the heel of the club hitting the ground first... and hence the shock coming up the shaft at you.

First thing to find out is where you are hitting the ball on the clubface. Get some impact tape, or simply use black electric tape, masking tape, a spray bottle of water or baby powder and put on the clubface. Then find out where you are making contact. Until you know if you are making clean contact in the center of the clubface, or where you are making contact, it will be difficult to try and correct until you know where you are consistently making contact. If you are getting vibration it is likely you are hitting it far away from the sweetspot.

Sounds like a common reaction to a reverse pivot, albeit a severe one. Weoght hangs back and the only way to get the club head to the ball is to subconsiously flip the club at it. Hence the POP up.
