hole in one! kinda..

i was playin at a little cheap 9 hole course a few miles from my house.. usually dont play it but its cheap and i just wanted to get in a quick 9 after work.. anyways.. they have 2 holes on each green and your supposed to move the flag stick to the other hole when your done playing it..

i pulled on the 9 iron on hole 6 and hit it to the right side of the green.. pin was on the back left.. i sneezed right when the ball hit the green and when i looked back up the ball was gone.. i figured it rolled off the green so i started going around the green looking for it.. couldnt find it ANYWHERE so i dropped a ball, took the penalty stroke and chipped up to the hole.. when i moved the flag to the other hole, i found my ball! haha.. it was sweet.. too bad it didnt count

Crazy game of golf....
Like the one I hit a few weeks ago... par 3 145 yards... put the first ball right into a thick hedge. Played a provisional. Plop. Straight in the hole off the tee. (for 3).

Then we walked up, and I find my first ball sitting there in the grass beside the hedge. Took four to get it down.

Did you watch the Big Break Europe v. USA at all? There was an episode where guys from previous shows came to play with them. Good 'ol double D hit one into some nasty shrubbery then played a privisional. The prov was a fantastically long fairway splitter. He "glanced" in an effort to declare his ball lost but everyone else insisted on looking for it. He was so pissed when they found it buried in the bushes, just classic double D!

This is Decision 27-2b/1:

Q. At a par-3 hole, a player hits his tee shot into dense woods. He then hits a provisional ball which comes to rest near the hole. In view of the position of the provisional ball, the player does not wish to find his original ball. He does not search for it and walks directly towards his provisional ball to continue play with it. His opponent (or fellow-competitor) believes it would be beneficial to him if the original ball were found. May the opponent (or fellow-competitor) search for the player’s ball?

A. Yes. In equity (Rule 1-4) he may search for five minutes provided that in the meantime the player does not play a stroke with the provisional ball, it being nearer the hole than the place where the original ball is likely to be. The player is entitled to play such a stroke. If he does, the original ball is then lost under Rule 27-2b and further search for it would serve no purpose. In match play, if the player so proceeds and his provisional ball is closer to the hole than his opponent’s ball, his opponent may recall the stroke (Rule 10-1c). However, recalling the stroke would not change the status of the original ball, which was lost when the provisional ball was played out of turn. See also Decision 27-2c/2.
****************

I read this to mean that the player who hit the provisional was entitled to hole out for a score of four, if he could have done so before his opponent found his other ball.

Something else I learned while looking this up - your provisional ball is not in play until it reaches the point where it is closer to the hole that your original ball, provided that the original ball is not lost outside a water hazard or is out of bounds. In either of those cases, the provisional is in play after it is first struck, and the original ball is not found. But if you hit a ball into what you think may be an unplayable lie, you can hit a provisional ball, take six strokes to reach the original ball, then decide to play your original ball without penalty.

Interestingly, I was in a situation similar on Thursday in a seniors match (match play in pairs).

I duffed my tee shot off a par 3 into waist high grass 40 yards. I asked one of the locals we were playing with if that was going to be findable, and he said "No chance in there!". So I hit a provisional which was OK.

Now.... I looked, and found it. deep in the grass on a pile of stones. Unplayable. Took a drop, and frankly, it was still unplayable, so I picked up.

After the hole, my partner told me that I should have declared the first ball lost, and that a second ball off the tee declared to be "the ball in play" before it was hit, rather than call it a provisional.

Is that right?

I believe that you have the right to call a provisional ball if you are uncertain of the playability of the original ball - if there is any chance that a ball might not be lost. Just because the local said "no way" doesn't mean that your ball may not have come to rest in a bare patch of ground from which you could have played. So you were within the rules to call your second shot a provisional. And you don't have to look if you don't want to. Your opponent, however gets five minutes to look. Once the ball is found, and you declare it "unplayable", and not "lost", then you had to proceed as if the provisional stroke had never been made.

If you hadn't looked for your ball, and instead played your next shot using the provisional ball, and if your provisional ball was closer to the hole than your opponent's, he could have made you replay the provisional ball, since at that point you had played out of turn.

That's the way I read the rule.
