Playing a tournament round ....

without playing a practice round on a course you've never seen before, is just dumb.

Playing in 97*F and 90% humidity is even dumber.

Sheesh. 2 birdies, I never lost a ball, and I still shot a 95.

I keep forgetting that Georgia is hotter than Tampa. I was dyin' on Sunday as I finished up my round at noon. I actually started getting a bit dizzy at one point. I had gone without water for about four holes and felt it.

92-degrees and soaking wet is no way to go through life, son...

It was so hot out there Saturday that I was soaking a towel in ice water and putting it on my head between shots. And I had a terrible headache. In hindsight, I think I was 2 steps away from heat exhaustion. Yes, I was drinking lots of water, but it didn't help much.

I went out after work this afternoon and played 9 holes at Forest Hills. From the blues, I shot a 37. But we had thunderstorms this morning and the temp was only 78*F. It felt like spring.

A couple years ago I played with a friend in 100º and 90% humidity and we were the only ones stupid enough to be on the course!! 18 holes yet. It was so "still" we drove the cart full speed to our balls to get some breeze. And no trees for shade. I swear we must have had six consecutive beers in a row each as fast as we could get them down. And did that air conditioned bar at the course feel good. Soaking wet.

Playing any course for the first time I end up with a few, "If I had know that was there, I would not have hit that club" moments. Nothing like hitting the perfect drive only to find yourself without a good second shot.

That's one of the main reasons I love my Sky Caddy SG3. I played a course last week I hadn't played since 1999. Before that I used to play in a league there so I was real familiar with it but in 1999 they shut the course down and renovated it. Aside from adding a bunch of new tee boxes they also added some 60+ fairway bunkers (well placed, I might add ). They were all mapped on the GPS and that helped me a lot with club selection and avoiding them.

On one par 5 I hit one of them off the tee (even thought the GPS told me it was there). I really should have played away from it but I thought I could carry it. I told the guy I was playing with "this never used to be here!"

Yeah, that's one point for the SkyCaddie. My laser rangefinder does a lot of things well, but it can't see over hills or around corners.

I bought a very nice yardage book in the proshop before starting out. Pretty pictures of all the holes. By the time I was halfway through the round, my mind was so befuddled from the heat that I was unable to make much sense of it.

I think I will wait a few months until it cools off some and go back to that course and whip its ass.

I am also going to suggest to the tour director that next year he add Forest Hills to the playing rotation.
