Switching to righty...Can it be done????

So i'm playing in an ambrose event last weekend with a couple of mates. Shotgun start, teeing off the 7th which is a par 5. About 230 metres off the tee (255ish yards) is a fairway bunker coming out into the fairway. Hit my drive and takes one bounce and in.

Play the round and as we have to walk down the 7th again, ask my right-handed mate for a hit of his driver (just a no-name brand). Well i'll be damned if the driver doesn't just fly the bunker, it clears it by a good 20 metres. Can't believe what has just happened so try again... and this one is an exact copy.

Now I once obtained a right-handed club handicap for experimental purposes and was a handy 18 marker, but did not have any extra length like this. So now the seeds of doubt have been sown.

The question is can anyone actually swap hands and bring their 'cap lower than their "natural" hand???

Just wondering if anyone had heard of anyone actually succeeding at this venture and to what effect? I've heard a few stories of good golfers doing the same but still falling a couple of shots short. Let me know your thoughts and musings or tell me if I'm being completely ridiculous.

This would also help the ho'ing situation...

This thought has occurred to me numerous times over the years but never tried it. I know (from shooting competitive archery) archers that have switched from left to right hand or vice versa have went on to much better scores.

Switch away, I've done it in the past and it is great for the novelty value of the look on other peoples faces when you do it mid round, but that's about it.

I can play to mid 20's LH'ed and I'm now off 6 RH'ed but only the LH'ed game is improving. I can hit the ball fine LH'ed but not as well as with my natural RH swing. Also my LH short game just does not exist.

I have one lefty friend who switched from left to right golfing about 5 or 6 years ago. He plays much better as a righty. He does almost everything else left handed.

I also have a lefty friend I am teaching to play golf this year, right handed So far he is progressing well and has a pretty solid swing.

One other benefit is that right handed golf equipment is easier to come by.

Last year when I couldnt break 100, I tried RH for a few swings, and most in my group thought my RH swing looked alot better than the left... But I stuck with LH and am improving enough to not warrant a switch... but I have a very dominant left hand, which may help more than hinder if I were to swing from the right side. I am very left handed, and my right hand is useless cept for handshakes and holding my drink.

And think of all the bets you'll win...

"Hey guys, let's all hit a few drives LEFT handed... I bet I can hit it past the 200M marker..."

"You're on!"

A very handy shot/skill to have with your ball hard up against a tree.
Flip the club over and smack away, while your playing partners stand there with mouths wide open.
Happened a few months ago, bloke said, "Geez you're pretty much rooted here."
Flipped over a 5 iron, smacked it 190 yards with a pretty little draw and made up and down for par from beside the green.
For five units too....
(Units = skins, etc... Aussie term)

I'm a natural lefty but learned to play right handed. Quite a few years ago I tried to make the switch to left but it didn't work. I was ok with the short irons but lost distance with my driver and fairway woods.

If you're longer with the driver it might work out for you. I didn't putt lefty as I couldn't get a feel for that at all.

As others have said being able to flip a club over when your up against a tree is a big bonus.

One of the pros that I used to work with played right handed and was a scratch player lefty as well. He was longer left handed but had much better control and accuracy right handed.

I'm not sure which hand I am. I do most stuff with my right hand, but I prefer the left if I can help it. I have right handed clubs, but should probably add a left handed club just for those bad lies.

You guys are all freaks..... I can't handle this thread. The game is tough enough "one-handed." You are seriously pissing off the golf gods....
