Good Signs

Someone on another forum had some swing questions and I broke out my 5 Lessons book off the shelf. I got to browsing through it and realized, unknowingly, I am doing a lot of things dead on.

The stance/ball position Hogan shows is dead on what I am using right now. The big one though, the grip. Holy Crap. I took my natural grip, the one I use and feels just, well, natural now and it is exactly as Hogan shows it in the book.

These are good signs considering I just came off my best ballstriking round ever. I even hit a perfect 13* off the deck and hit a driver 260 off the deck during that round. My shots are flying higher and straighter than ever.

Amazing how I started working on these fundamentals and expected instant results. The truth is it's taken a few months and I really didn't go back into the book, it's just sort of happening by itself.

Ezra, are you using this ball and foot position? In the past year, my ball position has been more central, but yesterday I tried to use Hogan's and it seemed to help (some).

does that pic assume the ball stays in one position, and the right foot simply moves further back?

I have read the ball position should be based on the natural lean of the club relative to the low point of the swing arc. This also ensures the clubs loft is not manipulated

thats a good ? as i looked at it i saw the same thing.looks like your stance gets more open and narrower as you go down in clubs.

Yep, that's the way Hogan said he played it. That picture is from 5 Lessons.

You are right Doc and I noticed towards the end of the round. I was too closed with my iron shot and blocking them. Sat I was playing more open and hitting them well. I also was not getting though the ball with the driver. On #10 I finally got away from the ball. I said "I'm either hitting this dead up the middle or hooking it 50yds. left". I hit my slight fade 270+ up the left side.

That diagram is exactly how I learned to setup for all the clubs too.

I think most people are too closed with their short and mid-irons. Usually when I start having swing problems it's because my stance is too closed.

The last tournament I played in (a 4 man scramble) I was hitting last and I had a 7i into a green we really needed a good shot on. I setup for the shot and as I was taking my practice swing one of my partners said "Aren't you setting up that shot WAY left?" because he saw the open stance.

I would have been pissed except he was a good friend and I told him "nope, I know what I'm doing". I hit the shot to about 10 ft. and he just looked at me and said "I guess so".
