Thread: Three clubs and a putter competition

  1. Three clubs and a putter competition

Oh Oh.... next Monday is the Captain's competition at our club...
A Stableford with three clubs and a putter.

I've never had to think about this seriously in the past! So what would you go with?

    My current thoughts are:
4i - because I can hit it well off the tee and the fairway
7i - medium range, plus short chips from just off the green
Sand iron - for 100 yards in. (and God forbid, bunkers)

  2. Driver 5 Iron GW. It really all depends how long the course is.
    WITB: Nike SQ 10.5* fuji 26.3 S, T60 (S), 904F 19*
    4-PW Nike Pro Combo forged (TX-90's S)
    54* SV Tour S400
    60*SV Tour S400
    Ball: Taylormade TP Black
    2009 Season Low: 70 (-2)

  3. #3
I haven't done one of these in a while but I think I'd take:

    23° Hybrid
    7 iron
    Gap Wedge
    Putter

I think with those 4 clubs I could probably hit almost any shot I had to and only give up a moderate amount of distance off the tee.
What's in my Datrek Edge cart bag:

Tour Edge Exotics 10.5° GD YS-6+ Stiff
    Tour Edge Exotics CB1 16.5° 4W
    Power Play System-Q Hybrids 19
    °, 23° and 25° FST Pro White
    Acer XP905 Pro
    6-PW, Dynalite Gold S300
InaZone CNC Spin Milled Satin 50°/8°, 54°/14°, 58°/4°
    Boccieri Golf
    B3-M Heavy Putter

    Best Round: 68 (par 70, 71.1/123)
    Handicap: 11.8

"The best wood in most amateurs' bags is the pencil"

  4. I'd have to go 3w, 7iron, gap wedge. I can ramp the 7iron up over 180 if needed and hit the GW out of bunkers. The 3W I can hit fade or draw, high or low and max out around 255-260 with a slight draw so that's a no brainer as my tee off club. IMO take the clubs that will give you the tightest gap and most workability. I've done this once and liked it. I'm a chronic shotshaper (meaning I'm always trying to work the ball and it gets my in trouble) so I love crap like this, gives me a venue to show off.

  5. 4wood,5iron and Gap wedge.
If at first you don't suceed, spin around in circles.

    4H Adams A2
    5-PW Adams A2

    Ping CraZe putter

  6. #6
3 iron, 7 iron, lob wedge, putter. I can crank a 3 iron 220+ and split the fairway, 7 iron is so-so around greens, but is better for approach shots probably, lob wedge good for anything within 80 yards.
    Insert hilarious golf-related quote here.

    2I: Ping Eye2
    3-PW: Cobra 3100 I/H
    Wedges: Titleist Vokey 56*06, Mizuno MP-R 60*05, MP-R 52*07 (found it, now I'm up to 15 clubs)
Putter: Yes! Natalie (currently being used), Yes! Victoria II (retired, misbehaved too many times, esp. on fast greens)
    Ball: Pro V1x

    Handicap: 12.6 and rising

Currently not using the driver. The 3 wood is long enough.

Lost balls in 2009: 1 (and counting)

  7. This sounds like a lot of fun. I'll have to try it. I think I'd go 3 iron, 8 iron, lob wedge, putter.

  8. #8
    5 wood, 6i, 52* GW

With the addition of the putter, these probably account for well over 80% of my shots anyways. I am guessing if I played with just this combination my handicap would likely be well within 5 strokes of what it is now.

Distance club that has some control(could be driver).

Mid-Iron for workability but some distance.

And how about this idea? A Shottalk 3-club tourney? Some time in the next three weeks play a round with 3 clubs and a putter. Report your score. I'll toss in a used sock puppet or something as a prize.

    Now that's an interesting thought!
On Monday I shall be playing my home course in this three club competition. The par 3s for me are :
    PW
9 or PW depending on the wind and pin position
6 to 8 depending on the wind

.... and I was thinking of taking my 7i and SW

I'm going to have to think hard about making shorter shots with the 7i.

The other critical factor is that this is a Stableford competition, and that I go off 24. On all but the shorter par 4s I need three shots to get onto the green, and therefore course management can come into play even more. So I intend to try 4i off the tee (which I can hit accurately and a decent distance), 4i off the fairway, and a 7i in to the green. In other words, still split those holes into 3 shots into the green, but in different lengths.

I should be able to potentially rack up the points with the shots given on each hole.

Spot on. Think about it this way. You play every par four hole as a par five. Get on in 3 and two-putt for a bogey. Let the other guys hit driver/wedge, and then try to figure out what to do when they snap hook a driver into the rough and have to hit three wedges to get to the green.
