Thread: Irons easier to hit than Hybrids?

Irons easier to hit than Hybrids?

How come I can knock the snot out of my crappy assed cavity backed Acuity irons but can't loft the ball with a hybrid to save my life?
I even have a TM 2 Iron which I hit well. Is it the sole of the club? Some sort of mental block? Am I standing too close or too far from the ball?

More & more I have been relying on my 5 & 6 irons either off the fairway or from the rough simply because I seriously never miss with them.

What is the secret to properly using a 3 or 4 hyrbid?

Next I will ask for the answers to successful chipping.

  2. I had the problem of playing too far forward and like a fairway wood. I play my 21* out of a 7iron ball postion and hit it very well. I'd rather hit a hybrid than a 6iron, that good.

Yes - the hybrids should be played with a more downward strike. Rule of thumb - play them more like a mid-iron than a long iron.

As for chipping? Hybrids I can do, chipping not so much...

Ya I agree with the other two posts. Swing it like a 8 iron with same set up and TEMPO.

Chipping always amazing me. Such a short and seemingly uncomplicated stroke yet it in the past it has given me so much disappointment.

Live in the huge metropolis of Rio...well ok maybe it's only 1000 people. About 30 minutes or so south of the Dells.

I just started trying to bring the ball back in ym stance and it's working. Still working on the hybird, though. Right now I think I still smack my 3 and 4 irons better, as in straighter and good ball flight.

Once I get the swing down better, the 3 and 4 irons might just go, even though I hit them pretty well, and I pick up another hybrid maybe.

I hear Rio is a good community. Is your home course Pauquette, Saddle Ridge, Portage CC, or do you travel to Madison?

    Good luck with hybrids.

I can't hit a hybrid to save my life. It sprays, it pops weakly into the air, I hit worm burners, you name a mishit, I've probably done it with a hybrid (although I have yet to catch one on the hosel...). I'll take my 3 iron anyday. It's better than a more rounded hybrid or 3 wood out of the rough because of the leading edge, and it flies a lot further (For me, at least). I've tried everything - ball back, ball center, ball forward, play it like a short iron, whatever, no dice.

For me, there's no secret - I've given up, and am sticking with the long irons. Unless someone can really enlighten me.

Pauquette is closest to me & I play it quite a bit, Saddleridge is ok but really easy with a slope rating of 109...sure I get a decent score but it's almost like cheating. Haven't played Portage CC yet since the amount of trees & narrow fairways is a bit intimidating right now.

I head into madison a lot, just played Tumbledown the other day, but also hit Yahara, Glenway, Door Creek, Lake Windsor, The meadows of six mile creek, etc etc.

I either hit the hybrid great & it goes where I want or a have this nasty little slicing worm burner that goes about 20 yds to the right. I was actually looking for a plain old 3 & 4 iron the other day when for some reason I just decided to get the Halo. Like I said before, I have that TM 2 iron & supposedly those are hard to hit for crappy golfers yet I hit that a lot better than any hybrid.

I'll have to give this a try, I usually set it up like I would a 3 or 4 iron, front of center, whereas my 8 iron I keep back of center. Might be the cure to my really sporadic hybrid shots without a tee. :hunter:

Yeah, I have to agree. Hit whatever gives you the best result. If the 73 degree wedge, the 1 iron, and the 4.5 degree lofted driver give you the best results, by all means use them. Not using what you're best at just because "everyone's hitting something else" is just throwing away strokes.

  13. I personally don't get it. I can close my eyes and hit my hybrid 200yds. I'd hit the green from 205 with it like a PW from 120. If they made the head I have in a 24* I'd bag that too, no questions asked.

Exactly. I SUCK at this game, and I hit pro shots from 200 yards in the rough with my 3-hybrid. Swing and watch ball fly to green, take two hops and stop.

    Can't argue with that.

  15. It took me a while to figure out how to hit my hybrid.
I was always trying to hit like a wood.
Once I started taking nice and easy swings with it, the ball started to fly real nice.
