How do you play this sand shot???

Left of the fairway about 75 yards from the center of the green in fluffy sand and a great lie. Flag is on the left side of the green about mid way up. Green is 40 feet front to back, about 65 left to right, and slopes from back to front.

I normally hit my PW about 120 so I aimed for about a half inch behind the ball and went about 20 feet past the whole. I never released the club and I was misaligned so the ball ended up about 40 feet right.

I ended up with a three putt.

I would take a sand wedge and take a 3/4 swing picking it cleanly and trying to get a little spin on the ball.

From 75 yards I would make a normal sand swing, with a 7-iron opened up to expose the bounce.

Straight out of Dave Pelz' book, and one of the few things he preaches that works for me.

75? 2/3 Swing with Lob Wedge, course, I never do a full swing with my lob wedge.

Just put it a little back in your stance to make sure you get pure contact, ball first. And play one club up, usually.

Those two are the general rules of thumb from a fairway bunker.

Ditto for me.

Out of the fairway this is a money shot for me from that distance. This is my normal LW shot and distance. I actually usually play the ball back in my stance for the reasons mentioned even if the ball were in the fairway.

I tend to believe on this shot the ball may likely come up about 5 yards short for me because of the sand, but from that distance I would just take being 5 yards below the stick as opposed to trying to produce as shot for which I am not familiar.

I would probably try to take my pw and pick it clean with a 3/4 swing and hope for the best. If I got it anywhere on the green I would be happy.

Thanks for all your replies. Next time I'm playing by myself and there's nobody behind me I'll try everyones suggestions and see what works best.
