A break from the driver

You'll find my driver in the classifieds. I think it's time to give the driver a rest while I work on my swing. I'm hitting 3W 240 and can control the ballflight with it. Feels like my iron swing and the swing I use on the 3w are exactly the same. With driver? I'm doing something different or the same thing isn't working. I'm hitting it dead left a lot and hitting some hooks with it. My backswing is out of control. I feel like I can get the swing under control more if I just leave it be for a while. Temp tees will be up pretty soon anyway around here. I figure I can build another one in the spring.

but why sell the driver? just keep it and use it when you get your swing like you want it.

Lol. Yeah right. I'd need a heck of lot more than $239.

I did the exact same thing as you. Well, at first my swing was OK. I really didn't know what I was doing, pretty much beginners luck. Then there was a certain point in which whenever I'd hit my driver, I'd mis hit every shot. I decided to take a break from the driver. I teed off using my 3 and 7 woods for about 6 months. I took a lesson, and the guy taught me how to keep my swing on plane, and low, I picked my driver back up and have been hitting them pretty well ever since.

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately I've not followed through and actually made things worse. I sold my driver and got 3 more drivers. I played today and it hurt me a lot. I scrambled my way around hitting some great recovery shots but I only hit 2 fairways all round. Fortunately the rough was not that thick and I hit a lot of low trajectory draws at the range yesterday... I used that shot 5 times today with sucess to get back in the hole.

I got sick of my driver about three months ago.. So I purchased the new Titleist 907D2 and hated it. I went back to my old driver, hit buckets of balls with it and finally started to get my swing back with it. Now that I have stuck with it through thick and thin, its been better than ever before. It just takes patience and time haha.

pro's tend to stick with the same equipment for quite some time & that policy works for them. Maybe your issue is that you change clubs so damn often you never get time to develop a relationship with them, figure out how each one prefers to be used?

Ez, if I used your philosophy, I would have to sell everything except the driver. From the time I started this crazy game, I hit the driver better than any club in the bag...still do. I don't hit it long; and at my age, I never expect that. It is fairly rare, though, that my tee shot is not in the fairway.
After the drive, it is pretty much a crap shoot for the rest of the clubs.

It is really frustrating when all your playing mates praise your drive and then look away and get very quiet when you duff the second shot.

I'm the opposite. There are 3 par 5's on the backside of the course I played yesterday. 1st one I pushed right behind a tree, hit a low hook 5iron that ran out almost 220 on top of the 100marker and stuck a skip stop GW 10ft. behind the hole. I was trying to spin it back off the ledge but it stayed on the slope. 2nd par 5 I sliced it right and was under a huge thorny bush. I had all I could do to put a head on the ball and get it out from under. Again I hit a massive drawn 5iron out of the rough, uphill and over 200yds. onto the left side of the green. Last one I yanked it left bad and had a bunch of tree in front of me. I took a 6iron and hit the hardest high draw I possibly could to get it up through the smaller branches. That was an amazing shot and drew all the way back into dead center 90yds. out. I stuck a SW to 8ft. So with 3 terrible drives I still hit all 3 greens. I missed every putt though and parred all 3. Driver and putter... if only I could get them in the same league as my iron and wedge play. If I was smart I'd get the most forgiving, straightest driver I could find rather than keep getting these "TP" things.

Lol that might not be such a bad idea there Ez, shape the shots with your irons and not your driver.

Ezra76,

From what I was reading in your earlier thread "15 minutes" it sounds like you do 2 things with your irons and your FW that you don't do with your driver. You are keeping your right leg and knee braced (not letting it get outside of your foot) on the backswing, and you're keeping your arms and body swinging together instead of independently from one another. Focus on your right knee braced and feel you upper left arm and outer left pec (chest) stay together as you swing. If you do these 2 things, it won't matter what driver you use. Let me know if that works.

If you want more info on a very simple swing I'm teaching my students, check out my website in my profile.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll try the old headcover under the armpit drill next time at the range.
