Hacker that SERIOUSLY wants to get better!

I joined this site some 3 weeks ago but other than a 'Howdy', some photographs of courses here & something on the USGTF I have spent my time 'looking around' & getting the feel of the forums.

During my 'looking' (or ferking if anyone recognises North Staffordshire language) I have come across a couple of 'Better SWING' links & wondered if anyone has experience of them ......... or whether they are a waste of time. The ones I am presently engaged in speaking to are:

The 'Symple Swing system' &
'How to break 80'.

ANY information on these two sites (especially if someone has tried both) would be greatly appreciated. If there is something BETTER than these, I would be happy to hear about it/them too!

Okay, I accept that a trip to the local guru for a private session would probably be better than a book/DVD to show me what to do ...... the only problem is that we don't HAVE a local guru within 200 miles of here - Puerto Plata on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic. I was hoping to get the principles from DVD's & the written word & then IF it works well, pass on the good words myself to anyone wanting to learn golf - for FREE & basically to youngsters who will be new to the game.

So Speak up me Hearties, give this hacker of thirty years some advice as to how he gets to H'cap 10 (down from 26) so that he can give something back to the game he enjoys so much! Retirement is boring with nothing to do but hack around a golf course!!

You can definetly learn from these products. The most important thing is to learn a good grip and setup and go from there.Once these fundamentals are in place you can't help but become a better player. Then your confidence will grow and you will believe you can become that 10 handicapper.

Thank you for your response Mac09, have you tried either of the systems mentioned? I tried to get into the forums for SympleGolf but regrettably MY comouter is blocking them out for some reason. The 'Boss' can get it on her's but she is too busy writing news about the DR (& formulating another book about the DR I think) for me to have acess to it until Tuesday - hence my question here!!

I have changed my grip (more knuckles on left hand now showing, overlap as opposed to interlock, .......) & setup is in the process of being reshaped. So far I have achieved better trajectory & cleaner contact .......... just not always the direction I wanted the balls to go in!!!

Anyone else have any input?? ........ Please??

I like the concept behind the symple swing. It really does do what it's (misspelled) name suggests. It takes the essential components of a good golf swing and tries to simplify them as much as possible. Firstly, it sets up with the hip already well over the front leg and open, and secondly, it suggests a palmy very strong grip so that the clubface remains square to the arc for the entire swing. It is largely based on the swing of Moe Norman.

I think that some very fun golf can be played this way, but I also think that it has a lower ceiling than a more traditional swing.

That is, the maximum limit that can be gotten out of the symple swing is lower than a traditional swing. Now, I think that you can probably get down to near scratch with the symple swing, which I think a lot of us would be happy with, but I don't think that there is much room for improvement beyond that. Part of the issue is that because the hip is set up and instructed not to move, a major power source is taken out of the swing. The symple swing wants you to use your shoulders for the entire swing. Also, because only the shoulders are used, it is easy to get into a bad habit of a more "armsy" swing, which is nothing but problems.

I guess what I am trying to say really here is that you could seek some alternatives, but I'd stick to Hogan's Five Lessons. Hogan's instructions are just as simple as any other system, and won't have these ceilings in place from limiting your movement. A really nice thing about having a more traditional swing too is that when something goes wrong, there is a much larger community out there to help you diagnose your issues. If you went with just a specialty swing, you'd have to go back to that small specialty community for help.

Actually the one I was referring to is based on Hogan's five principles and the grip on Nicklaus golf my way video. Originally written book by Joe Dante. This is based on his teachings.

Well, then, WBL, it should be excellent. I have found some books go way too far and a paralysis by analysis effect is all too common. That's why I have always come back to Hogan's Five. I've found it to be complicated enough that the important details are discussed, but not too complicated that it gets your head full of thought. If the New Four Magic Moves is similar, then it is probably good too. I just have never read it.

This ebook is quite excellent. Simple and to the point and well grounded in basic swing principles. Easy to read and undertstand and has simple illustrations that are easy to follow. If you like voice books, it also comes with an MP3 version of the book too.

I bought it about 2 weeks after you posted about it here and I added about 8 mph to my driver swing speed after making just a few small adjustments to my swing (suggested by the book).

My first round I played after the adjustments I was hitting my drives a lot farther. Even Youngun5 noticed, he was only out-driving me by 20-25 yds. instead of 40.

I doubt I'll ever catch the lad but the swing improvements were noticeable right away.

Thanks for the input guys. It looks like Andy Brown gets first bite at trying to correct my swing with a close follow up (possibly Mid March 2008) of How to Break 80 by Jack Moorehouse.

The 'Early Wrist cock' is also very similar to the Faldo method in his 'A swing for life'! Don't know about the rest of the book as I haven't got that far yet!!

Distance is NOT my prime aim - consistency IS!! Clean contact, a regular distance (& DIRECTION) would suit me just fine. If I keep my driver in play, follow that with a decent approach & then get down in two or three, I would be a very happy camper.

Wish me luck. My desire is to shoot 90 by mid March, low 80's by June. Anything better than that & I will be knocking back the Brugal Rum after every game (might even buy a couple for the local guys too!!). I'll keep you informed IF you like!.

I made Zero progress with golf until I stumbled upon people who had read and understood The Golf Machine. Since then I have steadily improved. The free video series at Lynnblakegolf from Mechanics to Feel is better than almost anything out there and its free, you just have to register.
