I swear, each year, to never play a scramble again!! Hate 'em! They're an abominition to the game of golf. The past couple of years, I've still gotten suckered into playing in the company annual outing. Difficult when you get e-mails from a number of those with which you have to work year round, suggesting you WILL be there! Grrrrrrr...
My history with scrambles is work related, church, charity events. Each of these attracts folks who use this as the single time they play golf for the year. One of our group in last year's company tourney hadn't picked up a club in 3 years... and it showed!! The company tourney tries to split up we few who play regularly amongst the greater number who don't. These are long, agonizing rounds that you begin to think will never end. By the time the long round is over, there are those serious thoughts about never playing the game again.
It would be nice, as you explain, to have someone who could put it in the fairway and allow you to "air it out"! Instead, we have three "dribblers" and then the pressure is such that you have to rein it in and keep it in the short grass. And, of course, if you don't perform... it's all your fault. "You're the golfer in the group! You let us down!" No, buddy! I didn't let you down. You let yourself down signing up for a tournament in a sport at which you havn't participated for a year!!! Grrrr....
I did enjoy one scramble last year. For the first time, the son-in-law and I entered our course's "family" tourney. It's a 2-person scramble and your partner must be immediate family. He's a really long hitter and, usually, in or near the fairway. Our iron play is similar. He depended on my putting and, for one day, it was on. We had fun and won second place in a tourney where you know some innovative pencil sharpening is done.
