the shanks

I only got in nine on saturday due to the weather, but I was able to lay down two solid shanks in those nine holes. I can't honestly say I don't remember the last time I shanked a ball on the course because I do........third shot on a par 5 from about 100 yards last summer......but it is very rare and very frustrating. So I hit two shanks in the woods.....make two triples on par 4's....play the remaining 7 holes 1-over with two boges and a bird...for a 42 on a par 35. Which is not terrible considering the two shanks I hit (a wedge from 85 and 5i from 170)....but man thinking about the shanks for the next week really sucks.

Cant explain them. I have had my fair share from time to time. I just try and make sure to have a loose grip and not to hit any mulligans cause when i hit mulligans i usually hit another shank. i just shank it and go on about my business trying to forget about it. But its like you said its hard to forget about it. I think the worst is when you shank one on the 18th and then your not sure the next round you play how your going to do because your last shot was a shank.

Just dont think about them, Im a "scratch" (lol) golfer and I s***k on avg like 4-5 balls on the range when im practising.

Its just moving too much basically, keep everything still and in position and you wont do it again.

Yea they suck big time.

I picked up a book at Barns&Noble the other day for a quick look. It called something like Fix my Swing or something. It just covers about every bad shot possible, what causes it and how to fix it.

For the shank its caused by hitting the ball with the hosel of the club but everyone knows that. They say the reason is because your arms and hands become further away from you on the down swing then they were at address. Sometimes its because you have too much weight on your toes in your down swing or you just aren't hitting the ball form the inside maybe coming over the top. They say don't stand further away form the ball that will just make it worse. They said try to keep more weight on your heels and make sure you swing from the inside. The drill they described was to take three balls and put them in a row perpendicular to your target line. After you get them in line remove the middle ball then address the ball furthest away from you then make your swing and hit the ball closest to you, it will force you to hit the ball from the inside.

I think I do it because I don't release my hands......as if my mind thinks I have to much club......and I just leave it open and hit it off the hosel. I tend to shank a few on the range during a session anyway.....but very rarely do it on the course. Guess I will see how it goes this weekend.

Personally, I think that even typing and posting that word anywhere on this forum should result in an automatic 30 suspension if not an outright banning.

Not sure if this is the case with you or not, but sometimes shots that squirt off to the right are not true hosel rockets, but instead are shots where the clubface was both open and not descending enough on the ball. Sometimes the result of just not getting to your left side enough.

I find myself doing this sometimes when I try to get too cute with a 60° wedge short pitch shot. I have been known to do 10 in row at the range when I get in a real groove.
