Ever seen a trap like this?

Got home and played a round on my home track. I guess laying off a day and the driver lesson really helped. I shot an 88 today!

Well, on with the story. Rounded the corner and found this beauty on the green. It had a couple trapped on the green.

It was a huge bull snake....thank god. Out here in West Texas they are usually rattlers.

Nice! Is that you in the pics? Looks like we have a new Steve Irwin!

Never had a snake on the green before, but then around here snakes arent real prevalent and we dont have any large snakes either

If I'm playing that hole, after I reach the green, I'm giving myself 2 putts

Around here we just have gators. This little guy was in the 2nd fairway a couple of weeks ago.

that would be a dead snake...I dont like them at all.........actually, I'd probably never have gotten close enough to it for it to harm me, or me harm it....

I'd just hook the club head under him and flip him off. I've had Eastern Diamondbacks that close to me and almost that size. They run most of the time.

Cool! I like snakes, as long as I don't have to get within striking distance of a poisonous one!

I found a 6-ft. Indigo snake once, and played with it for a while - wrapped it around my shoulders, etc. It was very docile, and seemed to enjoy the attention. Beautiful snake, with an iridescent blue, purple, black color . I returned it to the woods and let it go about killing rats and other nasty critters. I'm a bit leery of some of the constrictors, mostly because they have some mean teeth, and do bite if they get nervous. Although I did pet an 18-ft. python once at Busch Gardens. Pretty cool snake there.

The old NC days. A friend used to catch these near where I lived... Eastern Diamondback...

I had a cheapo camera about 6" from those fangs taking that pic and the thing was about 3' away from me on the ground...

I have great respect for those people who can do this (as long as they don't just kill the snakes out of ignorant fear.) But you won't catch me anywhere near that close to a venomous snake. Not unless it and I are seperated by a nice sheet of glass.

The trick to messing with non-venomous snakes is to train yourself out of the reflex to jerk back when they strike - their teeth are curved backward, so if you jerk when they strike the teeth will rip into you. If you just hold still it's just a few little pokes, unless they think they're snake enough to eat you. I actually had a baby anaconda strike my hand once, then wrap my wrist and proceed to attempt eating me starting with my thumb. For a size comparison he was really having to work to get over the thumb. So I guess he was as dumb as he was mean. The exception to this rule is tree snakes, like the Emerald Tree Boa -- they live off of birds in the wild, and as such have 3 pairs of VERY long teeth at the front, much like a venomous snake's fangs. They hurt like a mofo.

The trick to messing with venomous snakes is to not mess with them.

You must work with a lot of snakes. It would take me a few times getting bit to get over the reflex. I would've liked to see that baby anaconda going at it....

It does take a while to learn - I worked at a pet store during high school and college, so I got bitten enough times to get plenty of practice. The worst was the aforementioned tree boa - the bites went clean through my hand and someone else had to pull him off of me because he was stuck. I had to exercise great restraint to keep from turning that $800 snake into a bullwhip.

The scariest was a 28' Reticulated Python - thank God he hit the back of my boot, because that would've hurt like crazy and he most likely could've eaten me if he were hungry enough. That snake was just plain rude - always sneaking out of his cage and hiding up in the suspended ceilings. On a few occasions I was aided in finding him by the delirious manager of the Chinese restaurant down the strip running in yelling at me "I TOW YOU NO SNAKE IN STORE!!! I TOW YOU LASS TIME!!!" and I'd have to go pull him out of their ceiling and bring him home. He would always just poke his head out, I guess looking for some chickens. The reaction of the customers was priceless - they'd see his head poking out and be all cool about it, trying to act like they weren't scared. Then when two of us started pulling him out we wouldn't get much past about the 10 foot mark before that place was a ghost town His head was about the size of a football, they should've figured there was a pretty fair amount of snake on the other end of it.

In highschool, we had an atrium in our school. Included were several constrictors and two pythons. One ball, one larger variety. It was kinda cool having a class where the animals basically made up half the classroom. Part of your course requirement was to maintain the animals, chosen at random, within the classroom for one semester. A great way to get people into the understanding of animals.

We had piranhas, huge leopard frogs that would eat full grown mice like they were going out of style and a 10 foot gator.

It's no longer because the nutcase that ran it retired, but it was cool nonetheless.

I remember one time, we threw a pigeon in with the big constrictor. It did nothing initially and the pigeon just wandered around. Then, in the middle of class, the snake hammered the pigeon and wrapped around it. The pigeon shot every last ounce of shit out of it's ass against the glass. Made some chick puke (the chick, who later married a good friend of mine). It was nature at it's finest.

Ah, good times.
