well, changed the grip. took a little getting used to. i shot a 55 on the front nine. blew up on the last two holes and shot an 8 and a 10. i was exhausted, we didn't tee off until almost 10 a.m. back nine was sloppy. i didn't even play the last hole because i was too tired.

my drive looked a lot better. i did what a lot of you said. got rid of the baseball grip, stood up more and didn't choke up on the club as much. everything was looking like it was coming together until i got tired. i figure in another couple of rounds things will start to look even better and i won't be stuck in the fifties forever.

p.s. i work third shift so that's why i was tired.

Just keep practicing, Thom! Every day you golf you'll get better then the day prior, but i warn you...you'll keep improving and when you think you've mastered this game, BAMMMM!! You'll hit a wall that will revert you to the beginning. But that's OK, you'll work through that too. My only real advise to you is realize that you will figure women out before you figure golf out. The similarity is that they will both screw you, and you'll have to pay for both! Just have fun!!

ps: when you spell check BAMMMM it suggests MAMMY. I'm not kidding, give it a try! How I love ya, how I love ya...Mammy!

I switched from a baseball grip to the overlap a few years ago it takes time for it to feel right but I'm glad I made the switch. The grip is a big fundamental read Hogan's 5 lessons it gives you a good understanding of the grip and how to hold the club but he shows a weaker grip in the book than I use I have a strong grip with both V's pointing at my right shoulder when you get the book you will understand it better. Good luck

An interesting swing, i agree with some of the other posters about some basic fundamentals but i tend to get frustrated at everyone linking back to Mr Hogans fundamentals. It is a great help but not always the answer for everyone as he teaches you what he did to sort his game out and not maybe something that will fit everyones eye.

Back to the swing, camera angle not the greatest as it distorts aiming lines.

1. To me it looks like a feet closed, shoulders open address position with a very uncomfortable reach for the ball which presets many faults starting out

2.Hands track inside and under plane and although they set the club on not a bad plane there is more chance that it will lead to incorrect loading of the right wrist and elbow and produce a club across the line at the top which it does, there is also an increase in spine angle downwards during the backswing increasing stress and strain on your back and not facilitating correct weight shift

3.On the way the down there is movement of spine angle upwards which increases the chances of a mis hit, there is a good flattening of the shaft but because of the incorrect top of backswing position this flattening is then bringing the club too far behind and inside and increases the chane of a push, push slice, hook or snap hook, this is all reliant on how good your hand eye co ordination is on the day

I would suggest your posture is your biggest enemy

Sort out parallel alignment to your target
Get the arms hanging comfortably below the sockets and not outstretched
Find a grip comfortable but conforming

Doing these three things are the building blocks of a good swing, after you have done these i would like to see a video.

I am sorry to all the Hogan purists who love the book as i do, but it is not the antidote to everyones problems, i would suggest your PGA pro or finding a swing pattern and idea that fits you, not you conforming to their parameters

I love Charnocks analyses of swing vids. He's not critical and where faults are highlighted he's quick to provide solutions. There's always something in the analysis that I can apply to my own game, I have an over reach thing going on sporadically at the moment which I think is the reason for my right shoulder coming over the top

I too look forward to his analyses. And I understand his point regarding giving people the default "read Hogan" answer. I admit that I am guilty of that myself, but in Mr. Hogan's defense (not that he needs my help, lol) his chapters on grip and swing plane are considered almost biblical in nature, and should be required reading for anyone who aspires to improve their swing.

If guys gave an extra 10seconds to their setup - grip, stance and alignment I'm positive that 50% of our swing faults would be eradicated....

Yeah, set up is vital in the way you would not start off on a car journey facing the wrong way would you?? unless you were mad!!

I agree Hogans book is a great read and his information is spot on, but maybe suggestive of a slightly weak left hand would not suit all kinds.

Heresy! Dave is now constructing a voodoo doll with your likeness on it. Any unexplained sharp pains should be reported to your local witch doctor ASAP!
