Thread: So I took my first lesson ever yesterday

  1. So I took my first lesson ever yesterday

and what a difference a half hour makes.

I have to admin I was fairly skeptical about taking lessons, but I walked away convinced that with the right instructor anyone can improve.

Here is a bit of background on my swing/ability. I hit the ball very well (at least I like to think so) for some one who shoots what I do (mostly high 90's). I hit it a mile and make very solid contact but I spray the ball all over, lots of pulls and hooks.

So the pro, after watching me hit balls for a few minutes and I was waiting for the "Dude you suck, let's rebuild that swing from the ground up". Wow after I have hit about 15 balls or so he stops me and all he tells me to do is get closer to the ball and narrow my stance. I was like that's it??

So I set up it feels all weird like I’m way to close I can’t hit anything like this I thought. Boy was i wrong. I spent the rest of the lesson hitting long high bombs with every club in the bag, the only words out of the pros moth from that point on was "wow that’s solid" "man that's good" etc.

I couldn't believe such a simple easy change made such a big difference. I am playing tomorrow so we'll see then just how "better" it is, but things are looking up so far.

A trained set of eyes is key. Plus, he made what, like 50 bucks and said two sentences? Now, that's sweet. If I made money for talking, I'd be a ba-jil-yon-aire!
    Annual bag refreshening almost complete...

  4. Yeah, all in all I am pretty pumped that I at least have a hope of hitting quality golf shots. Alothough the real test will be how I do on the course.

The real test will be how quickly you abandon what he suggested the first time you hit a "bad" shot. He gave you a good set up change and you are going to have to have the discipline to stick with it even after you've hit a bad shot. Everybody hits bad shots. Don't revert back just because you hit one.

  6. When I get in a funk and can't figure it out I pay my pro $30 for a 1/2 hour lesson and he usually has me back on track in about five minutes....

And the most common mistake I see golfers make is "reaching" for the ball (standing too far away). Your pro gave you some great advice.

Excellent! Stick with it. The golf swing is very complex, and if you've found an instructor you have confidence in, that's gold.

  8. Well...I played my first post lesson round saturday. Armed with a new swing and a new driver I was curious to see what happened. I struggled at the start off the tee but thigns fell into place and I shot my lowest 9 nine of year. 44. if i would have putted better it would have been much lower.

I fell aprt on the back but i atribute that to the extreme heat we ahd on the weekend, I think it just wore me down. didnt end up with the greatest of scores in the end, but I was hitting the ball much better, so things are looking up for sure.

Took my lesson at Eaglequest Coquitlam. I was very pleasantly surprised with the pro I got. He's about my age and really all about just observing and making small easy to integrate adjustments. It was kind of funny actually during my lesson i was hitting the ball supre well, he told me i made his nice. "Nice to have a student that can hit a ball", he told me. I thought it an odd comment to make but had a chuckle at it. He didn'y believe me when I told him I hadn't broken 90 all year.

Piper like I said anytime you're ready to see some real long balls and take a putting lesson just name the time and place buddy. My grilfreinds unlce is supposed ot be taking me to Capalano (real exlcusive rich dude's club in Vancouver) sometime real soon I am looking forward to that.
