Hitting Long Irons....Help

I consider myself a good iron hitter and am usually pretty consistent with hitting them high and accurate. I hit my PW about 130-135 and each irons goes up by 10 yrds. My problem is when it comes to the 4i-6i my ball flight is not near as high as it should be.

I am just wondering if anyone has any tips/drills that they know that could possibly help with me hitting these irons more accurate and higher as they should be?

You must be hitting them a little thin if you're getting a significantly lower ball-flight. I'd prefer a lower flight with most of my stuff. My 9 iron is in the air for about 7 seconds and goes nowhere. It's very annoying. I used to hit my 9 about 140, up to 150 on a good day of striking. Now I'm lucky if I get 135 out of it.

If it's consistent, it ain't such a bad thing, really. But I would just recommend you concentrate on making a downward blow and not hitting them thin. Backspin will get the ball up in the air, so make sure you come down into the ball to create it.

Hit down on the ball to get it up in the air. Compress it against the turf. One of the most confusing truths of golf.

What SUX said: backspin via a good downward strike.

But....... shaft selection does come into play here. A good clubfitter can be of great help in fitting you into a set of shafts that will make it easier to get it up.

Which iron shafts are in your Titties now?

I do hit down on all my irons and get backspin on all down yo the 7 and sometimes the 6 iron


My problem is getting that consistently.
And I have original shafts on my DCI's

The problem I see with long irons vs. short irons is the loft and bounce. You can hit a 9i or PW from about a foot worth of different ball postions with the same swing and hit it solid. That goes down to like an inch with a 3i with 1-2* of bounce. I don't really focus on hitting down on it. I actually tend to pick it a little if anything. I'm not talking about flipping at it, just catching it from a forward postion in the stance. Pretty much the same exact setup for a stock 3i as if I were hitting a 7i over a 3 story high tree 100yd. in front of me to the green.

Why are you asking about long irons anyway? Are you not using that 22* hybrid? That's meant to eliminate the 3 and the 4iron.

Why are you asking about long irons anyway? Are you not using that 22* hybrid? That's meant to eliminate the 3 and the 4iron.

Yes I am using the 22* Hybrid and it does cancel out the 3i. I fly the ball about 215-220 with the hybrid. Thats why I am more worried about the 4i-6i.

Not that it is that big of a deal bc I rarely use these bc I am usually not that far out on my local courses, I would just like the confidence as I have with all of my other irons.

get a 4 5 and 6 hybrid.... problem solved... you may feel ridiculous for a spell and your friends might prod you but if your scores go down isnt that all that matter? i say that half joking but in all seriousness it would not be a bad idea... dana quigley uses a 7 hybrid so... give it some thought.

Same as I posted for the 3i pretty much. Play it a bit forward of where you'd hit your 8i. Basically if you hit a 4i or 5i like you were trying to fly an 8 really high, that's the postion. That's what works for me anyway.
