Proof of my putting woes

Shot a 44 over 9 today. I only played my driver on 3 holes, used the 3 wood on 3 others, a 5 wood off 1 and a iron off the tee box on the 2 par 3's. I hit 4 fairways with only 1 out of bounds and 3 GIR but my misses were usually just off the fringe or on it. But I had one 1 putt and three 3 putts with five 2 putts. 20 putts for 9 holes, ughhhhhhh

Not to rub it in but that sounds like some chipping woes as well. Are you counting putts off the fringe? I've experimented with putter off the fringe recently but it was an experiment gone wrong. I chip better than I putt, bottom line.

I actually chipped pretty good other than one hole where I fluffed a pitch and then the chip.

Chipping well does not mean not skulling or chunking it. Basically assuming that 1 putt was off a chip you're looking at 16.6% up and down %. Not so hot. Good chips to me are the ones that Twofast bats back at me because they are inside a foot.

putting is putting....

Some days more roll in than not. I HATE to putt right after they cut (same day) & huge greens suck. I am lucky in that I have a pretty good feel for putting. That & a $125 Odyssey White Hot XG 7 helped largely. I think a lot of people don't take balls into account either. Pro V's are like magnets to the hole as are several Nike's.

I personally think my putting got better once I finished off the (free) Pro V1's and got some d2 feels.

Ugh, 20 putts for 9 holes is just brutal. To me it sounds like a combo chip/putt problem. It sounds like it is time to start putting in some serious time practicing the short game.

Yeah, I was going to play in a tournament tomorrow but after that putting fiasco I can't justify the long drive and entry fee. Guess I'm hitting the practice green instead.

Shot a 40 yesterday with 15 putts, could have been a couple shots lower but missed a couple of 6-7' putts just to the right of the hole.

Wonder why it is that I never miss left, it's always to the right?

Don't let it get you down. It's just part of the game. Sounds like a pretty mediocre 9 all around. I mean, what is your handicap? I'm off 11.6 now and a 44 is not a "bad" score on 9 for me. It's pretty average considering my scoring average for all rounds this year is an 89.

I like to make a game of practicing chipping and putting. I drop 3 balls around the practice green and try to get all 3 up and down. I keep track of my bogies and pars so to speak. Sometimes I'll hit a bad chip and drop a putt, sometimes I'll hole out the chip. The goal is tap in's as much as possible.

Putting is putting. They are either dropping or they aren't. Sometimes I swear it's just not something you can ever have total control over. Chipping, on the other hand, I feel you can have total control over the outcome. Just look at Vijay for a putting example. Last week in the final round he was lights out. Yesterday he couldn't drop anything and shot even par on a course where everyone was throwing darts.

The best thing in golf is this.... putters have VERY short memories.

Next time you play the flatstick won't recall in the slightest the 20 putts.

In fact, it has already forgotten!!!

Actually, the 44 was a good score for me. My official handicap is 18 right now from turning in all my tournament score where my game completely falls apart. I played almost above my head yesterday other than the putting. I was delighted with the way I was hitting my irons and woods. Oh well, maybe one day I'll put a complete round together and get a new all time low score? But for now I'm got to work on my short game some more. My wife bought me that "Practice like a Pro". Might be time to break it out and see if there is anything to it.
