Thread: I may never hit another golf ball

  1. I may never hit another golf ball

I just got back from the Forest Hills Golf Course range; this course is semi-private and shared by the Augusta State University golf team.

Next to me on the range was a tall 18 year-old kid who is playing in a tournement tomorrow. I swear I haven't seen anyone hit a golf ball like that since the last time I was at the Masters. 275 yards with a 4 iron!!!!!

Damn! I was so embarassed that I didn't stick around to see him hit his driver.

  2. WOW!! 275 with 4iron?!?!?!?! That's nucking futz. I'm happy as heck when the 4iron goes 210!! I love watching people who can "really" hit the ball--hit the ball.

I'm happy when the driver goes 210 straight.

This kid was good. When he hit it, the ball actually made a shwooosing sound as it went downrange.

  4. No joke, I'd be happy with a 210-220 consistant drive. I truely belong here in with the hackers. He must hit his driver 1/4 of a mile..thats just nuts. Kudos to him.

When you see players like this - go up and ask them their name...gives us a chance to see if they show up on radar anywhere...college circuit...juniors or minor pro league etc...

I thought i hit a long ball 220 with a 5 iron and i am big and butch.

  7. Augusta State has a stud golf team but it's apparently a miserable experience. You're in the middle of nowhere playing on what is basically a mercenary minor league pro team with a bunch of international players and missing all the fun of college. I'll pass.

I did, he said his name was Zack but didn't offer his last name. He was with 2 coaches, so I didn't want to get too pushy.

  9. OK, correction. The guy was Zack Robinson, Oklahoma State junior. Long way from OK to GA, but I guess there is a tournement.

Oklahoma State: that says it all. One of the premier college programs in the U.S.

  11. 2 things that stike me odd, are that I've never heard of a 4 iron going 275, and 2 why would you want to hit your 4 iron that disatnce he obviously isn't good, does he hit his 6 iron like 215? How does he controll his distance, it would be very hard, I don't see why anyone would want to hit a 4 iron 275 , I know I wouldn't, and distance is nothing, I wish it was because I hit it miles but it isn't.

  12. Yeah I was thinkin' that.. according to those figures, he must tee off a putter from 150 =\

I wouldn't mind being able to do that though..

"Hey buddy, wanna bet I can hit a 4 iron 270?"
"Uh.. yeah, hah, you think you can?"

    Cha ching.

  13. TM....just cuz he crushes it doesnt mean he's not good. I would be willing to wager that the kid plays to better than scratch if he is on Okla. State's team. A local guy who plays on the PGA tour, name of John Elliott, absolutely KILLS the ball, he has led some of the events he's played in driving distance, and i bet he could hit a 280 yard 5 iron. He has greened the 1st hole, 324 yards, with a 3 iron(downwind of course) He can control distances very well, as his PGA status shows. Now if he just had a head and could put 2 good rounds together, he'd be one of the elite

Very true. I've been sending letters to various colleges, Augusta State being one, and when I got a letter back from one of the coaches he said that it would be a complete 360 in culture and enviornment than what I'm used too. He said it can be very easy to loose interest. Augusta State seemed to competive for me. Almost every top 25 Div.1 golf team only has one or two spots open on their team and there could be over 100 kids trying for those spots. I decided I'm better off looking at Div.2 schools. Just some advice for those trying to decide whether they want to play college golf or not.

Well, I didn't go over and yank the club out of his hand to verify it was a 4 iron, but that's what he said it was. I did see several balls hit with it out to the 275 yard area, and I had my distance glasses on.

This is a short range, kind of stuck in between the front and back nines, only 300 yards before the trees, and he was using all of it.
