I skipped a ball off water yesterday

I would've never thought that possible. I mean I know how to skip rocks and stuff, but I never thought I'd hit water with such a shallow angle that a golf ball would bounce off of it. It's a straight hole with a horseshoe-shaped lake on the left side, so you have to cross it twice. Pulled up on my drive (because I always let the water get to me on this hole - it never scares me anywhere else) and ended up skulling the ball. It went straight forward, hardly any up-ness at all. Skipped right across the water, and landed out in the fairway. F'in beautiful - I shoot the ball straight down into the hazard and end up in the fairway anyway.

The yin/yang of it? I came up about 5 yards short of the green on my second shot - and it rolled right back into the other leg of the lake I had to cross.

I've done it a couple of times this summer, but unfortunately no Ben Hogan lily pads. One time during a dry spell, with water levels low. It skipped two or three times and embedded itself in the steep muddy bank on the far side of the pond.

Rotten luck on hitting the other side of the (unlucky) horse shoe!

Oh hellaciously lucky - there was nothing nice about it. My favorite part of it was the progression of swearing in anger to swearing in joy over the course of about 2 seconds.

I've done it a few times and about put one in the hole once on a par 4 for eagle, did make birdie, on our old course that had water in front of the second green.

Always loved that hole in the winter as well, as a lake ran down the left side as well. Kind of a dog leg left of about 320 yards. When the water froze over you cold play a straight ball of the tee onto the ice and almost end up on the green. Ice is just as fun as water, as you can use it in your course management to gain yardage.

Do you guys seriously go play when it's that cold? I'll bet my balls wouldn't work worth a damn in weather like that. Or my golf balls. I play in the winter when the odd 50-60° day comes along and the distance I get (or don't get, rather) is damn depressing.

Beggers can't be choosers.

It is likely that or put the clubs away in December and not get them out until April.

Plus even though the lakes freeze, they still have some warmer days in the low 40's

Just 'cause there's ice, doesn't mean it's cold. No really! A couple years ago, I was wearing short-sleeves at our last ice race of the season. The temp was in the 60s, but the ice was still thick enough to support a 6 ton truck and trailer.

I won't play in it but I went to a golf dome in Milwaukee last winter with a course outside (with frozen ponds) and there were golfers all bundled up in parkas looking like a bunch of Eskimos out there playing.

Yeah, we have had many days in the 60's-70's with frozen ponds. I imagine some of you guys further north have frozen ponds into the early spring. Kinda like when you go to Colorado in June or July and still see snow capped mountains. Although it is still pretty cold up there. Went up to Rocky Mountain National Park when it was 80 and we were wearing shorts. Got up to 14k feet and there was about 8 feet of snow in sections and it was snowing. Even though it was still well above freezing, that 8 feet of snow~ice wasn't going anywhere anytime soon.

I have played at 33* the only time they won't let you play is when there
is frost on the greens...It helps to keep your balls warm.lol

Nothing like losing a golf ball in the fairway in a snow bank. Well, outside of maybe finding 10 in the middle of the fairway when the snow starts to melt.

Yes,I have with the ground frozen solid 0* F with no wind and sunny. Just bundle up and have fun. As long as the wind is not crazy and ground relatively snow free it's golf time.
