Thread: Never Again

  1. Never Again

Will I play this stupid course. Twofast and I couldn't get on at the course we wanted to because they were having a tournament. We went to this course we played once last year that is very tight, very hilly and very short. I shot a 44 on the front and was getting fairly aggrevated. On the back I stopped having fun. This course has the worst yardage markers and hole yardages I've ever seen. I hit an 8i from 150 and hit it 30yds. over the green. I hit my 22* hybrid on 340yd. holes and had like 70yds. left in. Mind you these were still in the trees since the holes were totally blind tee shots. If I had to play it again, I'd tee off with 6-7 irons to keep it in play. That course is easily 400yds. shorter than what is listed on the card. They had a par 4 listed at 435, I get up around to the top of the hill and it immediately went dogleg left. I wanted to just walk off after that. That stupid hole was no way more than about 390, not even close to 435. My driver ran out of fairway and was lost in the woods down a leave covered embankment.

I'd rather not even play than play there again. Not to mention a guy kind of ticked me off on 11. #1 is a par 5 running adjacent. Of course his group all was up the right side and I pulled a hybrid left. He drives up quickly and says "hey, that's my partner's ball!!" as I'm getting ready to hit. I said "no, it's mine, Prov1x #1 with a black line around it and a liberty mutual logo". I guess it annoyed me more that I pulled the next shot left over behind the green, never to be found again. I guess to play this course you've got to hit very short irons or be a very short hitter. Very few holes a shot could go 200yds. straight without running out of fairway. Which would be fine if I could have actually seen where the f$%& I was hitting beforehand. Not basing a tee shot off a picture on the card and a yardage that is 75yds. longer than the hole actually is.

    Re: Never Again

That, in a nutshell, is why I bought a Skycaddie GPS. I've played way too many courses where there were either no (or very few) markers, the markers were very wrong or you have a lot of blind shots and no yardage numbers to work with.

The course I play now I still use the GPS even though the carts have them because there are a lot of blind shots to landing areas and hazards that will get you into a lot of trouble if you are wrong by too much.

I feel for ya though... it really sucks to address the ball, confident that you have the right club then hit a perfect shot and watch your ball fly into the woods, pond, parking lot (I've done that! :laugh, etc. because of bad yardages.

  3. Re: Never Again

Yeah, that might have helped. My swing was a off so that didn't help much but the yardages were horrible. I was hitting 9i and PW from 150 markers at the end. My PW goes 115 and my 9i about 128. 7iron is my 150 club.

Not when it's way uphill and around a corner. Like I said, at the end I made the adjustment and was hitting PW and 9irons. I'm about golfed out for a while now. I want to get together with that old guy and do a little swingwork and then a few serious shortgame sessions before I go out again. I know I should break 80 very soon, getting frustrated about not doing it.

    Re: Never Again

If you can swing it, EZ, get GPS. I'm am so happy with my Skycaddie, it has truly changed my game. If feel totally lost without it. I tried to pay attention to how often I played more club yesterday because I knew the yardage to the back of the green. I hit at least 5 more greens over 36 holes because I mishit it, but had pulled enough club to hit it to the back of the green.

And I feel you about breaking 80. I haven't yet this year. I shot 82,81 yesterday, both those being about as high as i could have shot. Both rounds should have been in the mid-high 70's.

    Re: Never Again

A gps is a very good thing to have, I used to pace off all the time, and trying to FIND a marker, and THEN pace off is a PITA.....

I love reaching in my pocket, pulling out my Guru, and just looking at the different distances to carry, including traps and creeks, etc...

I feel that $200 was VERY well spent.

  8. Re: Never Again

Yeah, I'll have to take a look around at GPS. It would help to know exact yardages as well as get a much better feel for how far I hit my clubs. I'm going to be selling off some stuff soon on Fleabay so that might be a good next purchase.

Ez, does the name of this course start with a "C" and is right over the border in MA by any chance?

No. It's Beaver River down in South County. It's listed at 6006yds. 123 slope. I could play the course well but in hindsight would hit only 1 driver and a lot of 3,4,5 irons off the tee. It was just ridiculously tight and the blind shots really screwed me up. To give you an idea on how screwy the yardages were, I hit a 4iron off the tee on the 343yd. 9th and had 90yds. left in. #11 at Triggs is 341yds. and I hit 13* with about 100yds. left in usually.

Cripes, the 8th hole was listed at 439. I hit a driver and had about 70yds. left in over the trees after hitting a tree. Had I carried it on a better line I could have driven the green.

  14. Re: Never Again

actually I'm a fan of the range finder, it actually works better than the GPS, never goes out of GPS signal, doesn't require the course to subscribe to the service, and is tournament legal. Moreover, for those of us that stray to the neighboring holes, you can still use ur range finder to find layup spots, or distances to the green, sometimes the sky caddie gps finders think your on a different hole and reset.

I'd go with the laser range finder. If your pockets are deep enough i've seen one's that can pick up wind factors to.

I personally use a Bushnell that can figure slope into it's yardages, It's wonderful, really.
