Thread: So close to breaking 80... again.

  1. So close to breaking 80... again.

Today I went out to the soaked course and played 18. Throwing some serious darts with my wedges, nothing over 10ft. off the ground, even with the 60*.

I actually broke 40 on the front side for the 1st time with 39. On 9 I hooked a 3W and then hit the green with 7i over a 5story pine to 3 1/2 feet and missed the bird for 38.

On the back I started with 3 straight bogies, then 4 straight pars. Bogied 17 and needed a par on 18 for 79. 18 is 550yds., downhill but a huge tree sticking out preventing any thought of just hitting a nice cut out there. I blocked out a 3W right and was under this big tree with branches overhanging. I don't know what you call them but you can like walk right under it and the branches hang down. I piped a 13* out without hitting anything but never saw it. I hit a provisional just in case with more of a punch shot so I could see it. I never found ball #1 so had to take a par for double on #2.

    Another 81.

Oh, the rough today was brutal, long and wet. I don't think I ever truly knew the meaning of the word "flier"... I hit a 7i that flew the green, uhpill like 170 on the fly. I smartened up on #9. The one I hit over that big tree flew 165 to upslope behind the pin. I normally hit a 7i about 155-160 max.

Yeah. It seems to be a matter of figuring out what I can and cannot do on this course. I figured out the 500yd. par 5 on the front. I hit a hybrid off tee into the sun and lost track of it. I hit a provisional just in case... well it almost landed on top of the first one dead center, lol. Hit a 4i to 70yds. out and 60* to 9ft..

I have to figure that 18th out. It's totally unreachable but for some reason I feel the need to hit a long tee shot. I think I might try to hit 5W-5W and see how that goes. I should be able to go like 5W-5W-SW or 5W-22*-PW every time. Seems that my game revolves around my ticking time bomb of a tee game. Even the 3W is not totally safe on this course. On a good note my putting is getting better, 29 today and my wedge play is getting sick. I've really got the PW-SW-LW dialed in. Can hit them low and take spin off them at will, putting them all over the stick. I've been impressing myself at how exact I've been getting my wedge yardages. Now I just have to give them a chance to make some GD birdies for me instead of hitting these retarded tee shots.

Was in your shoes back in the spring. Seems like once you figure out how to break 80 regular it seems not quite so hard. You'll get there man just keep grinding!

agreed! especially with the grinding. that's what this game really is all about. One day can be drastically different from another. That's the beauty of it, on any given day could be your chance at breaking 80 Ez. Just keep at it!!

Re: So close to breaking 80... again.

What's all the fuss about? I've already done it twice this week.

In all seriousness though, I would imagine that when it happens for you it will be the same as it was for me. I didn't have to make a long putt for par to save 79 on the 18th. I knocked the ball onto the green in regulation, just missed for birdie, and kicked it in for a 77. I bet you end up doing something very similar and it will happen when you least expect it. In all honesty, it will most likely happen because you don't "expect" it.

Curiosity question, once you break 80 can you do it everywhere that you play or is it a matter of mastering one course at a time? I sniffed my first 79 yesterday, but shot an 80. Needed a par on the last and hit a great drive and then went for a right side sucker pin with an up hill lie and keep forgetting that up hill means ball will slide a little right on me....short sided myself, pin high into a green side bunker, got cute with the sand shot and left it on the edge of the green, chip down and one put for bogey......F-me....

For me, once I broke through the "psychological" barrier, I have shot in the 70's on courses I had never seen before. It's a lot more attitude than ability. Same goes for me now trying to break through the "par" barrier.

Hmmm, I'm hopeful then, makes sense though, avoiding trouble, hitting greens in reg and making a few putts should be the same no matter where ya go.

It is true. I play with a kid who's on a Div1 scholarship time to time. Seems like when I play with him and afterwords I "expect" to hit good shots and do. I actually execute the shots I'm capable of. Can't really explain it, just do it.

That being said, I shot a friggen 88 yesterday and struck the ball great. Nailed my driver all round. The wind combined with very hard/fast greens killed me though. I don't know how many shots hit the green then rolled off. I hit the front of the green with a 6i out of the rough on one hole and ended up 20feet behind the green. On the opening hole the starter complimented my drive "now that's ideal". A high cut that started over the cartpath and cut back, running down to 70yds. out. My low flighted 60* hit the ridge 3ft. in front of the stick, dead on it and bounced 10yds. off the back.
