Thread: Driver question

  1. Driver question

played a round to day and as usual I couldn't get of the tee with the driver. So around the 4th hole I start looking at everyone's driver and notice their drivers are 1 to 2 inches shorter then mine. When I ask they all had cut down their shafts.

So I choke up two inches and bam no more driver trouble hit almost all the remaining fairways and my misses were considerably closer to center.

So am I the first one to discover shorter drivers are easier to swing and still bomb the ball or am I late to the party

    Re: Driver question

    Late, but not by much.

I have always had inconsistency off the tee. Rarely had center face contact.. Alot of toe, and heel shots.. Slices.. hooks.. you name it.

Then I got my R9.. Got messing around with shafts, and I tipped one shaft a 1/4 inch... Used it, and it changed everything.. Then I got another shaft, and cut it down.

I'm playing with a 44.75" driver... I'm killing it. Center face more often, smoother ball flight.. More distance..

My 3-wood gives me fits sometimes too, and it's at 43" right now. I'm gonna hack a 1/2 off it one day this week I think, and have it get with the program.

Clubs have gotten too damn long these days.. Some drivers are seriously pushing almost 47"... PGA Tour guys generally aren't using anything over 45", and even the taller guys aren't. No way some Joe Weekender can control a super long driver..

My J33P plays 43.5" and I am in heaven with it. In fact, I ended up shortening most of my longer clubs (driver, fwys, hybrids, and 5 iron) because of the consistency of a shorter shaft. Many have "fallen" into this secret but many have been proclaiming it for years.

BTW I am 6'2" with arms like an orangutan.

When I was swinging very steeply (and occasionally when that old habit creeps back in on me) it makes a huge difference. Can't hit a long one for crap, but can bomb (with a fade) my 44" stick. When I'm swinging well (which for me is fairly flat) it makes no measurable difference in impact location. In fact if anything I hit the longer ones better in that case. I'm no dead-center hitter by any means, but I've noticed no tigher dispersion on the face or the fairway due to length of the stick.

It was just a fluke,,,choking up.
You'll go get your driver cut down 2" and start spraying the ball all over the place.

    :killersmiley:

Than... you'll realize you're playing the ball too far forward, and be hitting fairways like crazy, than be spraying the ball the naxt!

It's the golfing gods. They think they're real ****ing funny!
